Ramsey County Mental Health Center is hiring a Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS – Mental Health). This position works within the Mental Health Center and in the community, supporting individuals on their mental health recovery journey. The CPSS will participate in group facilitation, community engagement, walk-in and phone resource connection, 1:1 caseload support, and support of the integrated treatment team. Candidates must provide proof of Minnesota CPSS certification.

Key requirements and expectations include a focus on mental health recovery and wellness and the use of personal lived experience with mental health challenges to support others. The CPSS supports self-directed recovery and wellness planning, assists with coping skills, goal setting, and crisis prevention, helps individuals navigate mental health systems and services, and works to reduce stigma and promote empowerment. Training emphasis includes mental health recovery models, wellness tools, ethics and boundaries, and trauma-informed care.

Responsibilities
  • Assist clients with illness management and recovery and all aspects of psychiatric rehabilitation by modeling wellness, personal responsibility, self-advocacy, and hopefulness through the sharing of their story, role modeling how the needs of individuals can be respectfully met, and how a belief in one’s self and recovery is maintained.
  • Educate clinical and other staff about the recovery process and the damaging role that stigma can play in undermining recovery.
  • Help staff to better understand and empathize with each client’s unique experience and perceptions.
  • Provide guidance and encouragement to clients to actively participate in their own recovery.
  • Teach clients self-advocacy skills.
  • Promote personal growth and development with mental health and substance abuse issues.
  • Assist, teach, and support clients regarding activities of daily living, vocational skills, housing access, maintaining financial supports, and utilizing buses and other transportation in the community.
  • Provide side-by-side support, coaching and encouragement to help clients socialize and carry out leisure-time activities on evenings, weekends, and holidays. Organize and lead individual and group social and recreational activities and provide other opportunities to practice social skills.
  • Link clients to other external sources of help, when needed.
  • Co-facilitate Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) groups and other groups that facilitate recovery.
  • Assist clients in identifying with other consumers who have done well in recovery.
  • When appropriate, convey to clients their own experiences with mental illness and recovery.
  • Assist clients in using holistic/alternative healing practices, when applicable, for their psychiatric condition.
  • Attend and participate in all scheduled team meetings.

    Qualifications

    Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.

    Experience: One year of experience assisting clients in recovery practices, rehabilitation and wellness.

    Substitution: None.

    Certifications/Licensure: Credentialed as a MN Department of Human Services Certified Peer Specialist through a State endorsed program. Must have a valid class D driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
