Description

Gillette Children's is seeking a full-time (1.0 FTE) Genetic Counselor to join our team for a seven (7) month temporary position, Monday-Friday, 8am - 5pm based at our Phalen, St. Paul location. The seven-month temporary position will cover a staffing leave. The Ideal candidate will be available from early March 2026 through October 31, 2026. There is potential for consideration for future openings based on performance and business needs.

Provides direct patient care including genetic counseling, education, and support to patients and/or families who have genetic disorders, birth defects, or who may be at risk for genetic conditions. Works as part of a multidisciplinary team including medical geneticists, pediatric neurologists, and other subspecialties. May coordinate and support clinical research activities and/or education of medical trainees and other healthcare providers within area of expertise.

The hourly wage for this opportunity is $42.30 to $63.45, with a median wage of $52.88/hour. Pay is dependent on several factors including relevant work experience, education, certification & licensure, and internal equity.

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with care team in providing patient care related to genetic counseling
  • Assesses family and medical history and counsels’ patients and/or families in cases of genetic disorders or birth defects.
  • Exercises discretion and judgement when deciding which diagnostic tests and screening tests are appropriate for consideration by the patient and family. Interprets laboratory results for the patient. Educates the patient about the available choices regarding diagnostic and screening genetic tests.
  • Discusses risks, benefits, and limitations of genetic testing options. Facilitates informed decision-making related to testing options and subsequent management. Participates in ordering and informed consent processes.
  • Advocates for patient and family and promotes value-based decision making.
  • Assists families in understanding risk of occurrence, recurrence, and natural history of genetic conditions or genetic predisposition risk factors. Ensures information is communicated to patients and families with consideration for education level, age, culture, identity, and population-specific considerations
  • Documents in patient charts and develops follow-up recommendations for patients; documents case and maintains appropriate records, ensuring confidentiality.
  • Critically assesses relevant literature and information.
  • Participates in continuing education and maintains board certification via American Board of Genetic Counselors
  • Develops and presents educational and related programs as appropriate.
  • Coordinates and supports the execution of research protocols as needed, including recruitment and assessment of research subjects, provision of patient advice and support, and maintenance of research records. Incorporates and shares research findings into clinical practice.
  • Performs associated administrative or clerical tasks, which may include special projects, correspondence, and program funding activities.
  • Teaches and supervises training activities of residents and/or other health care professionals.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Master of Science or Master of Arts degree in Genetic Counseling from a genetic counseling program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC).
  • Board certified as a Genetic Counselor.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience as a Genetic Counselor.
  • Genetic counselors providing direct patient care to patients in the state of Minnesota must be licensed by the state of Minnesota.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to apply genetic counseling methods and techniques.
  • Ability to effectively communicate medical and genetic-specific information, test results, diagnoses and/or proposed management/treatment in a manner that respects the patient and family’s communication needs.
  • Knowledge of rapidly changing principles and practice of medical, clinical, and laboratory genetics.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information.
  • Ability to counsel patients and/or families in life management and coping skills.
  • Ability to maintain emotional stability to cope with human suffering, emergencies, and other stresses.
  • Ability to educate patients and/or families as to the nature of disease and to provide instruction on proper care, management, and treatment.
  • Knowledge of community support services.
  • Ability to supervise, advise, and train clinical professionals and/or students in area of expertise.
  • Ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops.
