Salary: The salary range is $49,316 - $82,532 plus $4,405 committee stipend. Starting salary is based on professional work experience, qualifications, and related legislative/government experience.
Telework: This position works on-site in the Minnesota Senate Building and Capitol during the legislative session. When the legislature is not in session, flexible hybrid options may be available.

Monday-Friday, 8am–5pm. This position requires long and irregular hours during the legislative session, including evening and weekend work. Additional paid time off will be available.

Position SummaryThe Committee Legislative Assistant provides administrative support for a DFL Senator’s office as well as the standing committee which they chair. All legislative assistants are responsible for the scheduling, constituent services, bill tracking, and more for their Senator. Additional committee duties for CLAs include organizing hearing materials, recording committee actions, keeping committee minutes, and preparing committee reports.
The CLA position requires excellent written and oral communication skills, strong organizational skills, and attention to detail. The position involves frequent public contact and regular communication with committee members, constituents, stakeholders, and legislative staff. Strong customer service and good communication skills required, as well as the ability to be self-directed and remain focused to achieve short- and long-term work goals.
Understanding of state government and the legislative process helpful but not required. Must have the ability to work long and irregular hours during session.

Education and Experience
Degree in Political Science, Communications, Public Administration, Social Science, Public Policy, Business Administration, or related area of study.
OR
One (1) year of experience in state government, policy advocacy, community organization, customer service, administrative support, legislative session in any capacity, service in the Military, or related.
In addition to the qualifications listed above, applicants must demonstrate:
- Strong organizational skills to manage a Senator’s office, including scheduling, email, phone, in-person visitors, and more.
- Ability to be self-directed and manage time, operate efficiently, meet deadlines, maintain multiple projects simultaneously, and deal with frequent interruptions and unpredictable schedules.
- Verbal and written communication skills with constituents, stakeholders, elected officials, and more.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel), Google Calendar, Zoom, and other virtual meeting programs.
- Ability to actively listen, project a calm demeanor, and discern needs when speaking with constituents.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality, handle sensitive information, and exercise sound judgment and discretion regarding information obtained in the course of employment.
- Knowledge and understanding of the legislative process.
