Highway Engineering Worker – Internship/Seasonal/Temp

Position Summary

Under direct supervision of the Engineering Supervisor, this position assists engineer technicians with surveying, construction inspection, and materials testing on County Road and bridge projects. The position also drives and operates County vehicles, helps set up work zones, performs flagging duties, transports construction materials to a laboratory for testing, may assist in laboratory testing, documents construction activities, and follows all safety procedures for personal and equipment protection.

Incumbent may be assigned to perform other duties as apparent or assigned.

The incumbent exemplifies the characteristics of a collaborative, innovative, and resilient work culture and models the appropriate behavior to create and maintain a resilient work culture within the department. The incumbent works in partnership with other employees, departments/divisions, agencies, and the public in delivering effective and innovative services.

Duties and Responsibilities

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Perform and/or assist in the performance of topographic and/or construction surveying, utilizing GPS, total station, laser level, measuring taps, and other hand tools.
  • Perform and/or assist with construction observation and documentation.
  • Perform and/or assist with field verification and measurements of construction materials placed.
  • Perform and/or assist with construction material sampling and laboratory testing.
  • Transport construction materials to state or private laboratories.
  • Help set up work zones with traffic control and perform flagging duties.
  • Drive and operate County vehicles.
  • File and scan construction documents.
  • Assist engineer technicians with other duties as assigned.
  • Perform other related functions as apparent or assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Equipment Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of highway equipment used in maintenance and construction.

Data Management and Analysis:

  • Skill in collecting and analyzing complex data.

Decision‑Making and Evaluation:

  • Exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
  • Develop objectives, evaluate effectiveness, and assess needs.

Safety Awareness:

  • Knowledge of applicable safety requirements.
  • Knowledge of typical road construction materials such as bituminous, concrete, gravel, steel, and hardware.

Technical

Skills:

  • Ability to work according to engineering specifications.
  • Ability to use level, read set, maintain grade, and read blueprints.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Intern Program:
    Completion of one-year in civil engineering, engineering technician, surveying, or related field.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Enrollment in civil engineering, civil engineer technician, surveying, or similar programs.
  • Experience in road work, construction, and traffic control.
Conditions of Employment
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to drive in the state of Minnesota.
  • Ability to travel in your daily work assignment.
  • Must successfully complete a background check.
  • Must comply with organizational and departmental policies.
  • Performs physical/mental demands of the work environment requirements for this position.
