Operating Engineer (Swing Shift) – Inside Higher Ed
OverviewMacalester College seeks to hire an Operating Engineer to work in its Facilities Services Department during the academic year (September through May). The position will be responsible for monitoring, maintenance, and operation of the central heating plant high‑pressure boiler system and central chillers, as well as general campus maintenance duties during the summer.
Compensation$44.53 per hour.
Schedule40 hours per week – rotating shift. The swing shift is 11 pm–7 am. Shift schedule: 7 days on, 2 days off, 7 days on, 2 days off, 6 days on, 4 days off. During the cooling season (mid‑May to mid‑October) the position transitions to a maintenance role with a flexible 1st‑shift schedule.
UnionAfter a 6‑month probationary period, the successful candidate will be required to join the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 70.
Responsibilities- Testing, monitoring, maintenance, repair, and operation of high‑pressure boilers and related equipment.
- Monitor boiler water quality and administer chemical treatment as indicated through testing.
- Monitor building automation systems to ensure proper temperature control and alarm response for campus buildings and equipment.
- Follow accepted processes for adjustments to boiler plant equipment, maintain project schedule awareness, and adhere to best practices.
- Perform preventive and predictive maintenance as directed.
- May perform testing, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of equipment and systems related to heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing issues in campus buildings.
- Participate in the maintenance on‑call rotation.
- Provide central plant support for special events on campus, which may include weekends and holidays.
- Follow safe work practices and all environmental, health and safety policies and procedures.

- MN First Class B Boiler Operator’s license.
- Exceptional knowledge of high‑pressure steam boiler operation, principles, applications, techniques, procedures, and dangers of such systems.
- Knowledge and skills in electricity, HVAC, and plumbing sufficient to perform testing, maintenance, and repair of systems.
- Significant work experience with building energy management computer systems.
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and diversity.
- Associate’s degree or vocational/technical school degree in an equipment/building maintenance discipline.
- Five years’ experience maintaining equipment and systems in a high‑pressure boiler plant.
