Northern Iron & Machine

Northern Iron is seeking a skilled and motivated Foundry Engineer to join our team. In this role, you’ll design new tooling, improve existing tooling, develop and maintain manufacturing processes, and provide engineering support across operations to ensure high-quality castings. You’ll work closely with Engineering, Quality, the Pattern Shop, and Production teams to solve problems, optimize processes, and drive continuous improvement. The ideal candidate enjoys hands‑on involvement in the foundry process and is passionate about scrap reduction, efficiency, and process excellence.

Salary

$80,000 – $100,000 annually (depending on experience)

What You’ll Do

To perform this role successfully, the individual must be able to complete each essential function with or without reasonable accommodation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and revise gating/risering and tooling drawings/layouts with a focus on standardization.
  • Troubleshoot casting defects identified by Quality, Engineering, or Production.
  • Make data‑driven decisions; gather, validate, and leverage relevant data.
  • Use problem‑solving methods including 5 Why, Fishbone, A3, 8D, and Kata.
  • Assist in accurate job cost estimates for tooling and castings.
  • Create and maintain foundry routing, bills of material, and standardized work documentation.
  • Support new job start‑ups and quality/productivity improvements by observing and advising through the foundry process.
  • Assist in resolving customer dimensional, machining, and form/fit issues related to tooling or equipment.
  • Lead and participate in continuous improvement projects across the business, ensuring sustainable results.
  • Collaborate with Platform Engineering to analyze data for process improvement projects.
  • Stay current on emerging technologies to maintain a competitive advantage.
  • Identify and communicate process changes to improve productivity, quality, cost, safety, and environmental performance.
  • Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.
What You Bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering preferred.
  • OR a Supervisor Certificate / Associate’s degree in Engineering Technology, Drafting, Industrial Arts, etc. with additional experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of casting/tooling engineering experience in an iron foundry preferred.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and technical skills.
  • Willingness to be hands‑on and engaged in the foundry environment.
