Position Overview
The School of Kinesiology in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Minnesota seeks to fill a tenure-tenure track Assistant / Associate Professor position in sport and exercise psychology. The successful candidate will have education, expertise, and research accomplishments in sport and/or exercise psychology. The candidate will join the broader department committed to faculty development and mentoring in research, teaching, and service.
The candidate will be able to align with and utilize various robust school and university research centers and cores. The candidate would have a strong commitment to mentoring and training graduate students from diverse backgrounds. This is a 9-month, full-time appointment located on the Minneapolis campus with a target start date of August 31, 2026.
Job Responsibilities
- Establishing and maintaining a nationally and internationally recognized independent research program in area of expertise
- Securing internal and external funding for research agenda related to area of expertise
- Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses and developing curriculum in areas of expertise within sport and exercise psychology and more broadly kinesiology
- Recruiting, supervising, and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in sport and exercise psychology
- Disseminating research through publications and presentations in the scientific community
- Providing service to the school, university, community, and profession
Required Qualifications
- An earned doctorate, Ph.D. preferred, in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Psychology, or a closely related field with an emphasis in sport and/or exercise psychology. ABD candidates will be considered (Assistant Professor).
- Record of emerging (Assistant Professor) or sustained (Associate Professor) publication and research productivity in sport and/or exercise psychology.
- Evidence of emerging (Assistant Professor) or sustained (Associate Professor) national and international scholarly reputation in sport and/or exercise psychology.
- Evidence of potential (Assistant Professor) or documented experience (Associate Professor) of effective teaching skills for graduate and/or undergraduate instruction related to sport and/or exercise psychology.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with people from a variety of communities, backgrounds, and identities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Emerging (Assistant Professor) or strong (Associate Professor) record of teaching and advising of graduate and/or undergraduate students.
- Potential for (Assistant Professor) or documented evidence of (Associate Professor) success in contributing to academic program development.
- Demonstration of emerging (Assistant Professor) or current (Associate Professor) extramural grant support.
- Evidence of potential (Assistant Professor) or documented (Associate Professor) mentoring of graduate students.
- Potential for (Assistant Professor) or documented evidence of (Associate Professor) internal and/or professional society leadership.
Department Overview
The School of Kinesiology advances interdisciplinary knowledge about physical activity and human movement in order to promote lifelong health and well-being in local, national, and global communities. Our innovative research, high-quality teaching, and collaborative outreach focus on the science and management of physical activity and human movement within contexts such as exercise, health care, and sport. We offer three undergraduate majors serving over 500 students (BS in Kinesiology, Sport Management, and Physical Activity and Health Promotion), an honors program, three minors (including a newly launched Esport Management minor), and a coaching certificate program.
Over 150 students enroll in six graduate degree programs (MEd in Sport and Exercise Science, Sport Management, and Physical Activity and Health; MS and PhD in Kinesiology with seven emphasis areas). More than 4000 students per year complete courses in our comprehensive Physical Activity Program. Our faculty comprise 16 tenured or tenure-track faculty and 8 full time non-tenure track faculty, and house 14 research labs and centers.
The work of the school is supported by 13 staff including CSBU (civil service and bargaining unit) and Professional and Academic Staff. The school is one of seven academic units in the college (see cehd.umn.edu and kin.umn.edu).
