Summary

Spire is seeking a Laborer in the Construction and Maintenance department. The C&M Laborer is responsible for a variety of tasks associated with installation, reinstallation or repair of mains and services. Majority of work is performed outside, in ditches, resulting in exposure to dust, dirt, dampness and weather conditions.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Mixing and pouring concrete and broom finishing patches in street and making temporary repairs to pavement.
  • Pulling out old services, including removing and disposing of old piping.
  • Cutting and threading pipe.
  • Cleaning tools and maintaining tools and general work around tool cart.
  • Locating, repairing and servicing all curb cock, valve, and stop boxes.
  • Irrigating trees, shrubbery or grass that may have been subject to leaking gas. May be required to replace same.
  • Bottoming ditches, digging bell holes. Installing main and service piping. Properly grading main and service piping. Setting blocking.
  • Painting service pipe and meter settings.
  • Making necessary repairs to foundation walls to the extent possible.
  • Assisting in loading and unloading supplies and materials from truck.
  • Cleaning, oiling, greasing and making minor repairs on all pneumatic tools. Replacing air hose and exchanging various tool attachments when necessary including starting and operating compressor (does not include maintenance).
  • Supplying information required on reports, time tickets, service and meter orders.
  • Refining asphalt patches in street.
  • Resodding and reseeding lawns.
  • Refilling sunken ditches.
  • Replacing cement around basement service pipe entries to make them water proof.
  • Performing carpentry work to a limited extent including setting forms for concrete.
  • Cleaning machines after each operation and restoring components to their respective storage boxes.
  • Assisting garage mechanics on minor repairs.
  • Assisting with tapping equipment in placing and aligning tapping machines properly and assembling tapping equipment with necessary attachments.
  • Taking grade in preparation for boring after main is exposed, setting bore and assisting in boring operation.
  • Operating directional bore locate box and rambore.
  • Testing connections for leaks.
  • Operating various air tools for excavation and back filling including paving break.
  • Operating air tools and equipment other than those requiring respirator protection for the purpose of preparing piping for repair or joining including scalers.
  • Installing bar holes.
  • Operating CGI for purposes other than leak searches.
  • Pumping drips periodically in emergencies.
  • Performing maintenance work involved in pipe corrosion protection operations such as applying green line, fiberglass, mastic, etc.
  • Using locate equipment to locate piping for internal purposes.
  • All other duties as assigned.
