Job Summary

The Saint Louis Zoo is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Fleet Technician to perform preventative maintenance and repairs on a diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment. This primarily includes golf carts, utility task vehicles (UTVs), full-size vehicles, diesel-powered vehicles, small engine equipment, heavy equipment, trailers, and specialized machinery. As a key member of the Facilities Management Division, this position plays an essential role in ensuring the functionality and reliability of the Zoo’s transportation and operational equipment while supporting the Zoo’s mission, core values, and three keys.

Key Responsibilities Vehicle & Equipment Maintenance and Repair
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks, including:
    • Inspections and diagnostic evaluations
    • Oil changes and filter replacements
    • Tire rotations, alignments, and pressure checks
    • Checking and refilling fluid levels (coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, etc.)
    • Transmission flushes and maintenance
    • Battery testing, installation, and replacement
    • Headlight, taillight, and turn signal replacements
  • Diagnose and repair vehicle areas, such as:
    • Engine Repair
    • Automatic Transmission and Axles
    • Electric/Hybrid components
    • Suspension and Steering
    • Brakes
    • Electrical/Electronic Systems
    • Heating and Air Conditioning
    • Engine Performance
    • Light/Heavy Diesel Engines
  • Diagnose and repair golf cart systems (electric and gas), such as:
    • Brakes
    • Steering and Suspension
    • Engines (gas/diesel)
    • Fuel Systems
    • Clutches
    • Controller Diagnostics
    • Electrical and Wiring systems
    • Batteries and Chargers
    • Motors
    • Transaxles
  • Perform maintenance and repairs on diesel-powered equipment, including troubleshooting fuel injection systems, exhaust treatments, and engine performance issues.
  • Conduct routine diagnostic tests using industry-standard tools and procedures.
  • Inspect vehicles to ensure compliance with Missouri state emissions and safety regulations.
  • Perform preventative maintenance based on manufacturer recommendations and fleet maintenance schedules.
  • Keep detailed records of inspections, repairs, and maintenance through the Zoo’s CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System).
Fleet & Equipment Operations
  • Operate, inspect, and assess the performance of various vehicles and equipment, including but not limited to:
    • Vehicles: SUVs, EUVs, trucks, vans, passenger vehicles, and trailers
    • Utility Vehicles:
      Golf carts (electric and gas), RTVs, and UTVs
    • Heavy Equipment & Machinery:
      Aerial man lifts, scissor lifts, skid steers, backhoes, front loaders, tractors, and forklifts
    • Small Engine & Landscaping Equipment:
      Chainsaws, hedge trimmers, trimmers, mowers, power brooms, blowers, chippers, cultivators/tillers
    • Other Powered Equipment:
      Generators, pressure washers, compressors, sewer jetters and portable welders
  • Conduct test drives, equipment assessments, and performance evaluations following maintenance or repairs.
  • Transport vehicles and equipment for service or contracted repair as needed.
Shop & Safety Compliance
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
  • Adhere to OSHA safety guidelines and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Ensure tools, machinery, and equipment are maintained in a safe working condition.
  • Follow all Saint Louis Zoo policies and procedures as outlined in the employee handbook.
  • Communicate effectively with the Fleet Manager and other Zoo staff regarding repair needs, maintenance schedules, and fleet availability.
  • Serve as a point of contact for fleet-related issues in the absence of the Fleet Manager.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of evolving automotive industry standards and best practices.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or trade certification in automotive technology preferred. 3 years minimum as a technician.
  • Proven experience as an automotive mechanic with expertise in vehicle diagnostics, mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems. Electric/Hybrid knowledge is a plus.
  • Computer proficiency within the Microsoft suite.
  • Ability to obtain an OSHA 10/30-Hour Training certification.
