Security Officer, 1st Shift

The Missouri Botanical Garden is seeking a full‑time (Unarmed) Security Officer to join our team. The Security Team protects our garden. In this role, you’ll provide a visible presence while patrolling buildings, grounds, and parking areas to ensure the safety of staff, visitors, and property—including during large‑scale public festivals and events.

The garden offers a predictable monthly rotating schedule. You must be comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions, interacting with the public, and answering questions about the garden. You will be required to work holidays and be eligible for holiday pay when assigned.

1st

Shift: 7:00 am – 3:00 pm
2nd

Shift: 3:00 pm – 11:00 pm
3rd Shift: 11:00 pm – 7:00 am

Starts at $19.00 per hour. 3rd Shift pays a $2.50 per hour differential.

• Engage with the public and provide customer service to visitors, volunteers, and employees.
• Perform dispatch duties, monitor emergency management systems, and answer security phone lines.
• Patrol premises, conduct ground inspections on foot and with garden vehicles.
• Act as first responder to medical emergencies, administering First Aid/CPR/AED as needed.
• Detect and report suspicious activities that may threaten employees, visitors, volunteers, or property.
• Secure all exits, doors, and windows.
• Monitor surveillance cameras and HVAC systems.
• Respond to alarms promptly.
• Submit daily activity reports using computer programs.
• Identify safety concerns.

• Valid driver's license.
• Pass background screening and motor vehicle report (MVR).
• Minimum 2–3 years security guard experience; public venue experience preferred.
• Equivalent combination of skills, education, and experience considered.
• Good understanding of legal guidelines for area security and public safety.
• Excellent written communication skills.
• Obtain and maintain a security officer’s license (St. Louis City or County) within 2 months of hire.
• Obtain certifications within 2 months and renew annually:
  American Red Cross CPR, First Aid, and Garden’s AED.
• Exceptional time‑management, problem‑solving, and conflict resolution skills.
• Effective communication at all levels; comfortable interacting with the public.
• Ability to work in varying temperatures and all‑weather conditions outdoors and indoors.
• Availability to work days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
