Horticulturist & Garden Operations Associate
Location: Sunflower Hill Farm – Augusta, MO
Position Type: Full-time / Part-time / Seasonal (flexible)
About Sunflower Hill FarmSunflower Hill Farm is a family-owned organic farm situated on 24 acres in Augusta, Missouri. Our property includes productive gardens, landscaped grounds, native plantings, an event and wedding venue, and a café. We are a small, collaborative team that takes pride in maintaining a beautiful, functional, and ecologically responsible farm environment.
Position OverviewThe Horticulturist & Garden Operations Associate plays a key role in the care, cultivation, and presentation of the farm’s gardens, grounds, and native butterfly habitats. This position balances hands-on garden maintenance with seasonal planning and ecological awareness, supporting both farm production and guest-facing landscapes.
Core Responsibilities- Plant, grow, harvest, and maintain vegetables, flowers, trees, shrubs, and ornamental plantings
- Maintain all property grounds through weeding, watering, mulching, pruning, and general upkeep
- Maintain and steward native butterfly gardens, including native plant identification, seasonal care, and habitat health
- Support seasonal and succession planting across gardens and landscape areas
- Monitor plant health and assist with pest, disease, and weed management using organic and pollinator-friendly practices
- Prepare soil, manage compost, and assist with fertilization and irrigation
- Utilize plant to correctly identify ornamentals, natives, and volunteer plants
- Apply knowledge of Missouri native plants, trees, and shrubs in garden maintenance and planning
- Operate and maintain basic horticultural and landscape equipment (string trimmer, auger, push mower, etc.)
- Collaborate with the Garden & Landscape team to prepare the property for events, daily operations, and seasonal transitions
- Strong willingness and ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- General knowledge of planting schedules, seed starting, and growing cycles
- Familiarity with native plants and interest in pollinator-focused gardening
- Greenhouse experience preferred
- Ability to lift up to approximately 50 lbs and perform physical labor
- Comfortable working independently and as part of a team
- Attention to detail and pride in maintaining high-quality, guest-facing landscapes
Degree or coursework in Horticulture, Agriculture, Environmental Science, or related field and/or at least 1 year of hands-on experience in horticulture, farming, landscaping, or garden maintenance.
Schedule & CompensationSchedule varies seasonally; weekends and mornings may be required. Compensation based on experience, with opportunities to grow responsibilities over time.
