Job Summary: The Registered Nurse (RN) is a professional practitioner who manages and directs nursing care activities in the areas of cath lab and interventional radiology. Must be energetic and highly motivated to support the success of Saint Louis University Hospital.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements:
Essential Functions
  • Assessment: Perform comprehensive nursing assessment (20%).
    • A) Complete assessment of new admission or transfer upon arrival to PACU.
    • B) Accurately perform and document patient assessments.
    • C) Provide timely ongoing patient reassessment and document pertinent observations.
  • Planning: Establish and coordinate a plan of care (10%).
    • A) Identify patient care needs.
    • B) Formulate nursing interventions to achieve desired patient outcomes.
    • C) Identify and initiate individualized care plans.
    • D) Collaborate with appropriate health team members for coordination of daily plan of care for assigned patients.
  • Implementation: Provide and document nursing interventions (30%).
    • A) Coordinate, communicate and document patient care with other disciplines.
    • B) Provide and document patient education and discharge planning correctly on PACU flow sheet.
    • C) Review and initiate physician orders in an accurate and timely manner.
    • D) Recognize changes in patient’s condition, take appropriate nursing actions.
    • E) Adhere to medication/parenteral therapy administration and documentation per policy guidelines.
    • F) Perform blood‑drawing technique to obtain lab specimens including blood cultures.
    • G) Notify anesthesia and surgical physicians of significant changes in patient condition.
    • H) Assist physicians with procedures, examinations, and other processes related to patient care.
  • Evaluation: Document effectiveness of nursing care (10%).
    • A) Perform and document ongoing evaluation of effectiveness of care based on assessment data, nursing interventions, patient response to medications, treatments and procedures.
    • B) Evaluate and document effectiveness of patient education including level of understanding.
    • C) Evaluate plan of care and modify as indicated.
    • D) Evaluate effectiveness of pain medication and then take appropriate nursing action.
  • Professional / Leadership: Demonstrate accountability for own professional practice (10%).
    • A) Participate in additional learning experience to increase professional competence.
    • B) Arrive at work as scheduled and begin duties promptly at start of shift.
    • C) Function as a resource person to co‑workers, patients/families, medical staff and ancillary personnel.
    • D) Identify problems, gather pertinent data, suggest solutions, communicate using appropriate lines of authority and work toward problem resolution.
    • E) Direct care delivered by Care Partners.
    • F) Adhere to and incorporate all customer service standards in patient care and work practices.
  • Safety / Infection Control: Practice according to safety and infection control policies (5%).
  • Service: Provide service excellence to the customers of Saint Louis University Hospital (10%).
  • Quality Improvement (QI): Incorporate quality assessment into daily work (5%).
  • Age Appropriate Care: Provide age‑appropriate care to specified age groups.
  • Specialized Care: Provide specialized care to patients at high risk for injury (1%).
  • Job Specifications
    • Minimum Education: Graduate of accredited school of nursing or education equivalency for licensing.
    • Minimum Experience: One year medical‑surgical experience required. Critical Care or Post‑Anesthesia Care experience preferred.
    • Required Course: ALS.

    Working Conditions:

    • Regular exposure to the risk of blood borne diseases.
    • Contact with patients under wide variety of circumstances.
    • Exposure to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries, illness).
    • Subject to varying and unpredictable situations.
    • Handle emergencies or crisis situations; may perform emergency care.
