Overview

The cardiopulmonary rehabilitation nurse specializes in helping patients recover from heart or lung conditions by guiding them in lifestyle changes, supervised exercise, education (diet, meds, smoking cessation), and emotional support, working as part of a multidisciplinary team to reduce future risks and improve quality of life.

Major Duties
  • The cardiopulmonary rehabilitation nurse is a registered nurse specializing in helping patients recover from heart or lung conditions by guiding them in lifestyle changes, supervised exercise, education (diet, meds, smoking cessation), and emotional support, working as part of a multidisciplinary team to reduce future risks and improve quality of life. They provide direct patient care, monitor vitals during activity, manage care plans, and connect patients with resources for long-term recovery.

    Teaching about heart-healthy diets, medication management, stress reduction, and smoking cessation. Nursing care in supervised exercise programs and monitoring patients  responses (telemetry). Offering counseling and support for anxiety and depression related to chronic illnesses.
  • Optimizing control of cardiovascular risk factors like blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes.
  • Provide outpatient care with oversight of licensed vocational nurses/nursing assistants as appropriate to the setting.
  • Coordinate care focused on patient transition through the continuum of care, patient and family education, patient self-management after discharge, and supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction.
  • Assist in directing the provision of nursing education, orientation, competencies and providing quality improvement and enhanced outcomes utilization.
  • Integrate outpatient knowledge, skills, abilities, and judgment; be self-directed in goal setting for managing complex situations.
  • Demonstrate competence in outpatient practice and decision making, deliberate planning, and critical thinking skills.
  • Provide and direct others in Veteran/patient driven care that optimizes the patient s experience, satisfaction, and/or safety for a team of patients.
  • Model high reliability principles and ICARE values to improve patient outcomes. Demonstrate knowledge across a wide range of responsibilities; communicate effectively with individuals and groups to build teamwork and purpose.
  • Promote collaborative behavior and team efforts. Be confident in abilities, initiate solutions, and remain alert to new opportunities, techniques, and approaches.
  • Share knowledge and learning opportunities that enhance current nursing practice for self and others.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Preferred Experience:

    3-5 years of medical/surgical nursing care. Cardiology and pulmonary nursing experience, certification in rehabilitation nursing or cardiopulmonary nursing, and outpatient clinic nursing experience is highly preferred.
  • Education and Licensure Requirements: U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.

    Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959. Subject to background/security investigation. Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process. Acceptable form(s) of identification will be required to complete pre-employment requirements. Must pass pre-employment physical examination. Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
