Overview

Barnes‑Jewish Hospital at Washington University Medical Center is the largest hospital in Missouri and is ranked as one of the nation's top hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. The hospital’s staff includes full‑time academic faculty and community physicians of Washington University School of Medicine, supported by residents, interns, fellows, and other medical professionals. Recognized for nursing excellence, the hospital was the first adult hospital in Missouri certified as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Acute Care Medicine nurses manage patients with a full range of clinical issues—including significant blood dyscrasias, advanced endocrine pathology, heart and renal failure, GI conditions, infectious diseases, asthma, cystic fibrosis, and many other conditions. Because of patient acuity, nurses receive advanced training to operate at the highest level of functioning. Each unit is led by a clinical manager and lead charge nurse, supported by an advanced practice nurse and a multidisciplinary team that includes case managers, social workers, physical therapists, dietitians, and pharmacists.

Responsibilities
  • Promotes patient and family‑centered care in a healing environment. Educates patients and families on illness management, post‑treatment home care needs, and medication administration.
  • Participates in activities that promote patient safety, quality, and regulatory compliance; participates in professional development.
  • Develops, implements, and documents individual plans of care with defined goals in collaboration with the interprofessional team and the patient, family, or caregiver, ensuring communication across the continuum of care.
  • Uses critical nursing skills to assess and evaluate physical, psychosocial, and emotional needs according to standards of care.
  • Assesses patient preferences, values, emotions, spirituality, culture, and barriers to involvement in care.
  • Works in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner, as this is a safety‑sensitive position.
