Position Summary

The Vice President, Business Development is responsible for designing and executing a company-wide growth strategy that secures profitable backlog, strengthens market positioning, and drives long-term client relationships across all sectors. This role serves as the strategic owner of the “get work” function, directly influencing where, how, and with whom the company pursues future opportunities.

Key ResponsibilitiesStrategic Leadership & Revenue Planning
  • Own the company-wide revenue strategy and partner with the President and CFO to align growth goals with business forecasts and capabilities.
  • Analyze market data, customer insights, and pursuit history to determine where to accelerate effort, including go/no-go decisioning, sector prioritization, and resource allocation.
  • Lead new market sector strategy, using data to identify opportunities and develop strategies for entering or expanding into new markets.
  • Lead annual and quarterly planning for pipeline development and target account strategies.
Key Responsibilities – Cross-Sector Collaboration
  • Partner closely with each Sector Leader to develop aligned business development plans tailored to sector-specific growth goals.
  • Drive pursuit efficiency by using data and analytics to focus resources on the right opportunities across Sectors.
  • Create shared accountability between BD and Sectors for backlog, hit rate, and client retention.
  • Ensure fluid handoff between pursuit and operations teams, including preconstruction and project management.
Key ResponsibilitiesTeam Leadership & Development
  • Build and lead a team of Preconstruction Managers, Marketing Specialists, and CRM/Data Analysts.
  • Mentor and coach Sector-facing staff on their roles in client development and project storytelling.
  • Champion internal training and external relationship-building activities across the company.
Key Responsibilities – Client & Market Engagement
  • Serve as the company’s senior relationship lead for key accounts, industry partners, and influencers, ensuring consistent client engagement across Sectors and leveraging insights to strengthen future pursuits.
  • Represent the firm in high-profile industry associations, events, and community efforts.
  • Oversee the capture strategy for major pursuits, including client experience, messaging, and win themes.
Key Responsibilities – Data, Systems, and Tools
  • Lead the implementation and optimization of the company’s CRM and pursuit tracking tools.
  • Establish reporting dashboards and KPIs for pipeline, pursuit stage conversion, win/loss trends, client satisfaction, and team activity.
  • Integrate business intelligence into go-to-market strategy and continuous improvement.
Key Success Metrics
  • Total annual backlog secured.
  • Pipeline depth and stage conversion rate.
  • Win rate on proposals and shortlist interviews.
  • Percentage of repeat work and client satisfaction scores.
  • Sector-level growth and market share gains.
  • Cross-functional engagement in BD process (Operations, Superintendents, Preconstruction).
  • CRM usage and data quality metrics.
Candidate Profile
  • 15+ years of relevant experience in business development, strategic marketing, or operations in the commercial or industrial construction sector.
  • Proven leadership in building BD organizations or functions within a complex, multi-sector business.
  • Strong knowledge of preconstruction, project delivery, and construction market dynamics.
  • Excellent interpersonal and storytelling skills, with a bias for action and accountability.
  • Experience deploying CRM and data tools to inform decision-making and optimize pursuit strategies.
