The Director of Development is a hands‑on player‑coach leader responsible for delivering high‑quality Word Press websites at scale while strengthening our development systems and processes.
This role combines technical leadership, hands‑on development, team management, and operational ownership. You will guide the development team, collaborate with design and SEO teams, and ensure our websites meet the highest standards for performance, quality, and scalability.
Responsibilities Leadership + Team Management- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of developers.
- Manage overseas development resources and maintain clear quality expectations.
- Conduct performance reviews and support professional growth.
- Identify hiring needs and help scale the development team.
- Collaborate with Design, UX, SEO, and Project teams to deliver projects on time and within scope.
- Contribute to complex builds, debugging, and technical problem solving.
- Lead high‑quality custom Word Press development across desktop and mobile.
- Ensure strong front‑end execution using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
- Troubleshoot performance, cross‑browser, and code issues.
- Improve development workflows, branching strategies, and code review standards.
- Define and refine staging‑to‑production deployment processes.
- Improve documentation and internal development standards.
- Automate QA, deployments, and repetitive development tasks.
- Maintain and improve Word Press development best practices.
- Build scalable theme, plugin, and Gutenberg block systems.
- Ensure strong site performance, security, and maintainability.
- Oversee launch readiness including redirects, forms, scripts, and SEO requirements.
- Lead website launches and migrations while preserving SEO performance.
- Establish Core Web Vitals benchmarks and performance standards.
- Work closely with SEO teams to ensure proper technical implementation.
- Maintain clean site architecture and schema implementation.
- Implement Word Press security best practices and plugin standards.
- Ensure ADA/WCAG accessibility compliance across builds.
- Improve QA workflows and reduce post‑launch bugs.
- Strengthen Bug Herd and development ticket processes.
- Improve development efficiency and build timelines.
- Help define hosting and maintenance standards.
- Identify opportunities to scale development through reusable systems.
- Evaluate new tools, automation, and AI‑assisted development solutions.
- 8–12+ years development experience.
- 3–5+ years leadership experience managing developers.
- Expert‑level Word Press development experience (custom builds, complex sites).
- Expert‑level front‑end development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript).
- Strong version control experience.
- Deep understanding of performance optimization and Core Web Vitals.
- Strong technical SEO implementation knowledge.
- Strong ADA/WCAG compliance implementation experience.
- Experience with website launches at scale.
- Experience improving QA systems and development workflows.
- Experience in agency or multi‑client environments preferred.
- Strong communication and decision‑making skills under deadline pressure.
