Medical Assistant III - Pediatric Endocrinology

Functions as a Medical Assistant in the pediatric endocrinology department, preparing and maintaining exam rooms, charts, obtaining reports and records, directing patient flow, and ensuring the smooth running of the clinical office. The role is scheduled for 40 hours per week.
PrimaryDuties & Responsibilities
- Interact directly with patients in the clinic setting, obtaining vital signs, conducting EKGs, performing phlebotomy, and verifying medications.
- Prepare for office hours by obtaining charts, scheduling tests, and preparing exam rooms.
- Assist with examinations, procedures and lab tests.
- Assist with renewal and authorization of non-narcotic medications per standing orders and department guidelines.
- Administer medications under the order of physicians or nurse practitioner, including vaccines and intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.
- Schedule and assign work to other Medical Assistants, assist in orienting and training new assistants.
- Direct patient flow, assist with special procedures/treatments, complete requisitions, route phone messages, patient questions and telephone communications to appropriate personnel.
- Coordinate care by calling patients with test results, scheduling appointments, assisting physician with return calls, scheduling surgeries, diagnostic procedures and admissions, and monitoring new and return patient contacts.
- Complete necessary paperwork and documentation in a timely manner.
- Answer basic questions from patients/families regarding treatments, diagnosis and procedures.
- Complete requisitions/orders per WashU guidelines.
- Monitor supply inventory, ensuring adequate supplies, equipment or garments are available and that they comply with regulations.
- Clean and stock exam rooms and sterilize instruments.
- Maintain HIPAA compliance, maintain skills/competencies and participate in in-services, staff programs, continuing education and cross-training programs according to established standards and WashU policies.
- Comply with OSHA, state and federal regulatory sources/standards.
- Participate in quality improvement activities to ensure appropriate clinical outcomes.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Normal office environment, exposure to blood‑borne pathogens, requires protective devices.
- Patient care setting, directly caring for patients.
- Typical physical effort: sitting at desk or table; standing or walking; bending, crouching, or stooping; occasional lifting (≤ 25 lbs).
Required
:
High school diploma or equivalent or combination of education and/or experience.
Preferred
:
No additional education unless stated elsewhere.
- Assessment Based Recognition (A ) – American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
- Basic Life Support – American Heart Association & American Red Cross
- Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) – National Health career Association (NHA)
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) – AAMA
- Licensed Practical Nurse – Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation
- Licensed Practical Nurse – Missouri Division of Professional Registration
- Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – American Medical Technologists (AMT)
- Registered Nurse – Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation
- Registered Nurse – Missouri Division of Professional Registration
- Relevant
Experience:
3 years - Medical Assistant: 3 years, Supervisory: 1 year

A driver's license is not required for this position.
Salary Range$19.21 - $28.85 per hour.
