Medical Assistant II – Orthopedic Surgery

Location: Washington University in St. Louis

Position Summary: Prepares and maintains exam rooms, prepares charts, obtains reports and records; assists with patient flow and ensures the overall smooth running of the clinical office.

Responsibilities
  • Patient Care Duties:
    • Interact directly with patients in the clinic setting and complete clinical tasks, including obtaining vital signs, conducting EKGs, performing phlebotomy, and verifying medications.
    • Prepare for office hours by obtaining charts, scheduling tests, and preparing exam rooms.
    • Assist with examinations, procedures and lab tests.
    • Assist with renewal and authorization of non‑narcotic medications per standing orders and department guidelines.
    • Administer medications under the orders of physicians or nurse practitioners, including vaccines and intramuscular/subcutaneous injections.
  • Communication & Documentation:
    • Direct patient flow, assist with special procedures/treatments, and complete requisitions.
    • Route phone messages, patient questions and telephone communications to appropriate personnel.
    • Coordinate care by calling patients with test results, scheduling appointments, assisting with return calls, scheduling surgeries, diagnostic procedures and admissions; monitor new and return patient contacts and follow‑up appointments.
    • Complete necessary paperwork and documentation in a timely manner.
    • Answer basic questions from patient/family regarding treatments, diagnosis and procedures.
    • Complete requisitions/orders per Washington University guidelines.
  • Equipment & Supplies:
    • Monitor supply inventory, ensuring adequate supplies, equipment, or garments are available and comply with regulations.
    • Clean and stock exam rooms and sterilize instruments.
  • Other Functions:
    • Maintain HIPAA compliance, maintain skills/competencies and participate in in‑services, staff programs, continuing education and cross‑training programs as per Washington University policies.
    • Comply with OSHA, state and federal regulatory sources/standards.
    • Participate in quality improvement activities to ensure appropriate clinical outcomes.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Required

    Education:

    High school diploma or equivalent, or a combination of education and/or experience.

    • Basic Life Support – American Heart Association
    • Basic Life Support – American Red Cross
    • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) – National Health career Association
    • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) – American Association of Medical Assistants
    • Licensed Practical Nurse – Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation
    • Licensed Practical Nurse – Missouri Division of Professional Registration
    • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – American Medical Technologists
    • Registered Nurse – Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation
    • Registered Nurse – Missouri Division of Professional Registration
