Job Summary

Provides technical scrub skills in the operating room during surgical procedures and assists surgical team as needed in any other capacity, according to established procedures. Must be energetic and highly motivated to support the success of Saint Louis University Hospital.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements Essential Functions

The following are essential job accountabilities and performance criteria:

1) Demonstrates professionalism when working

• Performs care for patient safety and well-being.
• Can scrub any procedure in primary cluster skillfully.
• Can operate all equipment in primary cluster.
• Demonstrates ability to operate computer by correct data entry.
• Follows established standards of practice.
• Demonstrates flexibility.
• Demonstrates knowledge and participates in specialty area.
• Maintains certification (when appropriate).

2) Cooperates with other personnel to achieve department and interdepartmental objectives, and maintain good employee relations

• Cooperates with other departments and their needs in the interest of patient care.
• Works closely with ACU and PACU, and attempts to assist them when requested.

3) Safety/Infection Control:
Practices according to safety and infection control policies

• Practices universal precautions and disposes of hazardous wastes per established guidelines.
• Maintains a safe, clean, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families/employees in accordance with hospital standards.
• Maintains clutter free environment.
• Keeps conversations and background noise to a minimum.

• Child:
  Explains procedures in language understood by child; comforts child and stands by for induction to anesthesia; maintains a quiet atmosphere during induction and awakening stages; provides warmed blanket to maintain body temperature; utilizes equipment and instrumentation appropriate for size.
• Adolescent:
  Involves patient in discussion of procedure; maintains privacy and confidentiality.
• Adult:
  Culturally specific care; maintains privacy and confidentiality; utilizes equipment and instrumentation appropriate for size; maintains safe environment.
• Geriatric:
  Respectful, addresses by title and family name unless otherwise instructed not to; provides warmed blanket; protects skin with additional padding if needed; involves patient in planning process and discharge planning.

Job Specifications

• Minimum Education:
  
  High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
• Minimum Experience:
  
  Either prior experience or graduation from an approved surgical technician program preferred.
• Required Registry or License:
  Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).
