Job Summary

Provides technical scrub skills in the operating room during surgical procedures and assists the surgical team as needed in any other capacity, according to established procedures. Must be energetic and highly motivated to support the success of Saint Louis University Hospital.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements
  • Demonstrate professionalism when working (70% of time).
  • Perform care for patient safety and well‑being.
  • Scrub any procedure in the primary cluster skillfully.
  • Operate all equipment in the primary cluster.
  • Demonstrate ability to operate computer by correct data entry.
  • Follow established standards of practice.
  • Demonstrate flexibility.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and participate in specialty area.
  • Maintain certification when appropriate.
  • Cooperate with other personnel to achieve department and interdepartmental objectives (10% of time).
  • Cooperate with other departments and their needs in the interest of patient care.
  • Work closely with ACU and PACU, and attempt to assist them when requested.
  • Practice safety and infection control policies (5% of time).
  • Practice universal precautions and dispose of hazardous wastes per established guidelines.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families/employees.
  • Maintain a clutter‑free environment.
  • Keep conversations and background noise to a minimum.
  • Adhere to dress code.
  • Report risk management concerns.
  • Assume responsibility for completing all annual mandatory requirements:
    Safety/Fire, Blood Borne Pathogen, Hazardous Communication, TB, Department Specific, Age Appropriate Care.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and safety.
  • Demonstrate care and courtesy.
  • Provide prompt, respectful, courteous service.
  • Meet the physical, spiritual, psychological, and emotional needs of patients and families.
  • Respond to patients’ needs promptly.
  • Apologize for mix‑up or delay.
  • Communicate effectively and maintain confidentiality.
  • Listen to patient/family concerns and address needs.
  • Explain procedures and all education in a manner that the patient/family understands.
  • Allow time for questions.

  • Provide cost‑effective services.

  • Recommend changes in practice that increase efficiency and minimize waste.
  • Minimize overtime and utilize time well.
  • Incorporate quality assessment into daily work (5% of time).
  • Participate in discussion of performance‑improvement outcomes.
  • Collect performance‑improvement data as assigned.
  • Participate in research activities.
  • Provide age‑appropriate care to infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients.
  • Maintain the safe environment using age‑appropriate safety measures.
  • Communicate effectively using age‑appropriate techniques.
  • Involve family or significant other in decision‑making related to services provided.
  • Demonstrate ability to provide service needed for the age groups routinely served by the department.
  • Attend annual age‑specific in‑service.
  • Position‑specific duties for Neonate/Infant, Child, Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric patients (e.g., warm blankets, quiet environment, equipment appropriate for size).
Job Specifications
  • Minimum Education:

    High school graduate or equivalent (preferred).
  • Minimum Experience:

    Prior operating room experience or graduation from an approved surgical technician program (preferred).
  • Required Registry or License:
    Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).
  • Required Course:

  • Working Conditions:

    Must be able to travel quickly between operating rooms, wear protective clothing, adhere to dress code, and work around electrical equipment, hot/cold materials, and chemical agents. Must have good organization, planning, reasoning, judgment, problem‑solving, and safety awareness skills.
  • Physical Requirements:
