Genetic Clinical Counselor I – Pediatrics Genetics (Adult Cancer)

Position Summary

This is a clinical genetics counseling position within adult cancer, working as members of the Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM) healthcare team. The role includes providing genetic counseling and education for patients and families, identifying, ordering, and coordinating genetic laboratory tests and results disclosure as appropriate for the genetic assessment. The counselor integrates genetic laboratory test results and other diagnostic studies with personal and family medical history to assess and communicate genetic risk factors and clinical implications.

The candidate should be able to work independently and collaboratively with other providers such as medical geneticists.

Primary

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Elicits individual and family histories and information regarding the psychological and socioeconomic status of the family.
  • Reviews with the family and clinical geneticist the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment planned.
  • Transmits pertinent information about genetic risks and mechanisms.
  • Assists the family in assimilating the genetic information and adjusting to its implications.
  • Implements the treatment plan and makes appropriate referrals to medical, nursing, social work and psychological services.
  • Provides follow‑up support to patients and their families.
  • Summarizes findings for patients and referring physicians.
  • Participates in the education of parents, community groups, physicians, medical professionals, agencies, staff and students regarding human genetics.
  • Facilitates provision of services, including intake and clinic organization.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of ongoing clinical investigations in genetics.

Education

Master's degree in Genetic Counseling.

Certifications / Professional Licenses
  • Basic Life Support – American Heart Association.
  • Basic Life Support – American Red Cross.
  • Certified Genetic Counselor – American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC).
  • Certified Genetic Counselor – American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMG).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Competent in interviewing and counseling techniques to elicit necessary information.
  • Knowledge of genetic and mathematical principles to understand the limits, interpretations, and significance of specialized laboratory and genetic procedures.
  • Ability to anticipate areas of difficulty and conflict, help families and individuals recognize and cope with emotional and psychological needs, and identify situations needing referral.

Salary Range

$62,000.00 – $96,100.00 per year.
