Internship Overview
Seeking highly motivated undergraduate engineering students to join the St. Louis County Department of Transportation & Public Works team for paid internships. This will be an invaluable experience which will provide hands‑on engineering experience. Positions will be opening in a variety of areas including roadway planning and development, roadway construction, material testing, roadway maintenance and traffic operations. Interns will receive training, guidance and mentorship from experienced engineers and staff.
The work schedule for the interns is flexible and will allow up to 40 hours per week during the summer with start and end dates which will correspond with school schedules. Internships will also be available for a variety of hours within the school year. The salary for this position will be between $16.39 – $20.65 per hour and will depend on the intern’s qualifications.
EssentialFunctions
- Assist in inspecting roadway construction activities to ensure compliance with project plans, specifications, and standards.
- Observe and document contractor operations, materials, and workmanship for quality assurance.
- Record daily construction quantities, labor, and equipment usage.
- Take field measurements and calculate progress and quantities.
- Collect and organize field data and reports for project documentation.
- Verify traffic control setups to ensure work zone safety and compliance.
- Basic construction layout and staking.
- Manage time and responsibilities.
- Communicate effectively, both written and oral.
- Maintain a high standard of work product.
- Adhere to safety policies.
- Perform other duties as required or assigned.
- Completion of one year of college coursework in Architecture or Engineering.
- Preferred candidates will have a valid driver’s license.
- Completion of two years of college coursework in Architecture or Engineering.
- Preferred candidates will have a valid driver’s license.
Seasonal employees are paid only for the hours actually worked. There are no additional benefits.
