Description
Seeking highly motivated undergraduate engineering students to join the St. Louis County Department of Transportation team for paid internships. This will be an invaluable experience that provides hands‑on engineering experience. Positions will open in a variety of areas, including roadway planning and development, roadway construction, material testing, roadway maintenance, and traffic operations. Interns will receive training, guidance and mentorship from experienced engineers and staff.
The work schedule is flexible and will allow up to 40 hours per week during the summer, with start and end dates corresponding with school schedules. Internships will also be available for a variety of hours within the school year. Salary will be between $16.39 and $20.65 per hour and will depend on the intern's qualifications.
Examples of Duties- Review development and roadway improvement plan aspects such as geometrics, traffic signals, utilities, temporary traffic control, drainage calculations, right‑of‑way plans, floodplain requirements, Stream Water Pollution Prevention Plan elements, etc.
- Create or review construction cost estimates.
- Conduct site visits during plan review for utility conflicts and accuracy of existing conditions.
- Use Bluebeam software to document site observations.
- Create software tutorials for the permitting process.
- Gather and organize plan review data from permitting software for process improvements.
- Research standards and specifications for project design and construction.
- Research and pull historical records for review.
- Organize and scan paper records.
- Manage time and responsibilities.
- Communicate effectively, both written and oral.
- Maintain a high standard of work product.
- Perform other duties as required or assigned.
Summer Engineering Aide I:
- Completion of one year of college coursework in Architecture or Engineering.
- Preferred candidates will have a valid driver's license.
Summer Engineering Aide II:
- Completion of two years of college coursework in Architecture or Engineering.
- Preferred candidates will have a valid driver's license.

Seasonal employees are paid only for the hours actually worked. There are no additional benefits.
Minimum qualification for all applicants: have completed at least one year of college coursework in Engineering or Architecture from an ABET accredited program.
