The entry‑level Mechanical/Industrial Piping Estimator will prepare discipline‑specific estimates for large multi‑discipline efforts or smaller independent projects, focusing on mechanical/metal trades such as structural steel, piping, welding, and boiler making.
Responsibilities- Evaluate contract documents, bid drawings, specifications, and, if necessary, visit the project site.
- Identify and quantify piping materials, valves, specialty items, instruments, and pipe supports.
- Read and understand scope of work, pipe specifications, and perform quantity takeoff for piping and mechanical systems.
- List items on a standard takeoff sheet and categorize by pipe specification.
- Read and take off items on Process and Instrument Diagrams (P&IDs), piping isometric drawings, and orthographic (plan) drawings.
- Organize the take‑off process to conform to bid breakdown forms and submittals.
- Estimate small piping projects with minimal documentation based on field experience.
- Visualize missing or unclear project details and mitigate potential risks.
- Maintain a list of clarifications, assumptions, and qualifications identified as risks and discrepancies during proposal development.
- Determine installation schemes to establish schedule, crew sizing, and geographic challenges.
- Apply company historical rates and production information to estimates.
- Understand basic trades other than piping (paint, insulation, scaffolding, etc.).
- Verify estimated materials against client specifications and industry requirements.
- Prepare bid packages for subcontractors (Electrical, Civil, Plumbing, Fabrication/erection, Welding, Painting, Passivation, etc.).
- Solicit pricing from material vendors and subcontractors.
- Coordinate with team members on larger multi‑discipline estimates.
- Communicate critical issues and estimate assumptions to senior managers.
- Ensure compliance with Alberici QA/QC and safety standards, client, and industry requirements.
- Ensure estimates are complete, well‑organized, and ready for management review.
- Develop project schedules focused on pipe erection; write execution plans as required.
- Research and develop innovative methods.
- Prepare proposals in conjunction with business development resources.
- Identify vague scope requirements or questions to qualify bids.
- On successful bids coordinate with operations for transition and turnover of the estimate.
- Assist project management staff with pricing issues on major project revisions after award.
- Process and manage large volumes of documents and data, organized for recall of work breakdowns, sketches, and pricing substantiation.
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, or a related technical field and internship/apprentice experience or equivalent training/experience.
