An Assistant Band Director is University High School serves the unique Catholic and Jesuit educational and formational mission of the school by designing and implementing educational curriculum in several instrumental music courses, assisting the band director with a variety of administrative tasks, conducting concerts and co-curricular bands, and fulfilling school expectations for ongoing professional and spiritual development.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Plans and develops an engaging, age-appropriate music instruction, aligned with the school's mission and philosophy, educational best practices and Jesuit guidelines.
  • Designs and delivers individual lesson plans in the area of instrumental music using a variety of teaching techniques and appealing to various learning styles.
  • Prepares materials for lessons, assignments, and assessments; evaluates student performance and provides timely feedback to support growth and mastery.
  • Assists the Band Director in the planning, coordination and supervision of school-sponsored performances, competitions, festivals and other co-curricular music activities, including athletic and school community events, travel and special ceremonies.
  • Support the organization and administration of the music program, including management of the music library, scheduling of clinicians and lessons, rentals and other program logistics.
  • Monitors and evaluates student progress through performance, projects and assessments.
  • Provides support for students' character and spiritual formation.
  • Discusses academic difficulties or behavioral problems with students as they arise and reports specific challenges and plans for support to school leadership and learning resource personnel.
  • Communicates effectively and professionally with parents, faculty, staff and administrators regarding student progress and needs.
  • Supervises students in classrooms, rehearsals, performances and co-curricular settings, ensuring a safe and structured environment.
  • Enforces school safety and security protocols.
  • Participates in faculty responsibilities such as supervision, pre-tenure formation programs, meetings, retreats and professional development.
  • Collaborates positively with colleagues and contributes to a supportive school culture.
  • Embraces, supports, and fosters diversity, equity, and inclusion in and outside the classroom.
Required Skills/Abilities
  • Thorough understanding of the pedagogy and best practices in education, including Catholic and Jesuit educational philosophy at the secondary level.
  • Ability to design lessons that teach instrumental band music in an engaging manner, applying a variety of teaching methods that encourage participation, understanding, and skill development.
  • Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships with students and foster a supportive, inclusive and respectful classroom environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with students, parents, colleagues and administrators.
  • Organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities and events throughout the academic year.
  • Creative problem-solving and adaptability in a dynamic school environment.
  • Proficient with technology and digital software that support instruction and communication.
Education And Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Instrumental Music or Music Education.
  • Knowledge and understanding of pedagogical approaches for band instruments.
  • Prior teaching experience in secondary education is preferred but not required.
