GENERAL SUMMARY

This position’s responsibilities include the implementation of all department goals to meet the district mission for inclusive educational programs for students with disabilities with a focus on instructional best practices and compliance. The assistant director provides leadership and direction of all assigned programs and is responsible for the success of those programs at designated locations. Responsibilities typically include supporting special education programs at the elementary level.

This position assists the executive director and/or designee with staffing, policy development, implementation of special education regulations, staff development, school support, data collection, record keeping, and the selection and evaluation of staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Provides leadership in Professional Learning Communities and Professional Learning Teams by supporting Ed Specialists, ESA leaders, and special services leaders’ meetings. This position will create professional development support for these teams to strengthen their leadership skills.
  • Supports Safety Net and guides the department members in meeting the Safety Net requirements.
  • Provides continuing support and acts as liaison between special programs (e.g., ESY, self‑contained), support services, community outreach, public agencies (e.g., inter‑district agreements), building principals, and staff.
  • Provides leadership for all instructional support services and communicates with stakeholders. Monitors all locations to ensure compliance with all program regulations and policies, including the preparation of all federal, state, and district reports.
  • Assists building administrators, staff, and families with special education law/compliance; IEP process and the writing of measurable goals/objectives, assessment, implementing data management systems, designing Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA), Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP), manifestations, and ensuring state standards are met through the IEP process.
  • Assists with the hiring, supervision, and evaluation of certificated and classified staff.
  • Assists with budget planning and program staffing.
  • Assists in interpreting and administering policies, rules and regulations.
  • Actively involved at local, state, and federal administrative and program association meetings as a district representative.
  • Plans and implements effective student transition between elementary and secondary programs addressing curricular, social, and program focuses.
  • Ensures due process compliance of special education activities, including assessment and student placement.
  • Reports incidents of child abuse, altercations, and substance abuse for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment, and adhering to the educational code of ethics and district/school policies.
  • Coordinates student placement in instructional support programs, as needed.
  • Demonstrates experience and sensitivity that affirm individuality and diversity.
  • Attends and participates in all required staff meetings and other activities deemed necessary by the district and/or building administrator in order to accomplish the objectives of the position.
  • Performs such other duties as may be assigned by the executive director or designee.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

This position reports to the Director of Early Learning and Elementary Special Services. The incumbent supervises and/or leads other employees.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Required to deal with a wide range of staff and student achievement and behavior. May experience frequent interruptions and must be able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously. May be required to deal with distraught students/parents/staff and may be exposed to infectious diseases.
