Job Overview
The Employment Counselor provides guidance and employment counseling functions to inmates inside state prisons and follows up with post‑parole inmates to collect data. This role collaborates with Prisoner Education and Reentry programs and travels weekly to multiple correctional facilities across Michigan.
Responsibilities- Deliver employment counseling to inmates and assist with post‑parole follow‑up.
- Collaborate with the School Principal, Education Manager, and Prisoner Education programs to prepare and place individuals seeking employment.
- Travel to various prisons on a weekly basis and accommodate varying work hours due to travel demands.
- Collect and submit data to the Office of Career Services and maintain accurate records of counseling outcomes.
- Bachelor's degree in education, guidance counseling, sociology, psychology, social work, or a related field.
- One to two years of professional counseling experience with inmates or individuals seeking postsecondary education or skills training.
- Employment Counselor 9:
One year professional experience. - Employment Counselor 10:
Two years professional experience. - Employment Counselor 11:
Two years professional experience plus one year equivalent in counseling or a related field. - Substitution of experience for the educational requirement is allowed if the individual has one year of professional counseling experience.
- Applicants must meet the ethical standards required for state classified service employment.
- Applicants with felony convictions are ineligible until satisfactory completion of any sentence, including parole or probation.
- All new employees will complete the Non‑Custody New Employee Training and additional online training modules.
- Positions are subject to pre‑appointment and random‑selection drug and alcohol testing.
- All required documents must be attached at the time of application.
