Overview
The VA St. Louis Health Care System (VASTLHCS) is looking for a Gastroenterology Physician to provide comprehensive, efficient, compassionate, high-quality healthcare to all patients, functioning as a member of the inter-disciplinary team providing clinical care to the patients at VASTLHCS in inpatient setting.
QualificationsTo qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
- United States Citizenship:
Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy - Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree in medicine or osteopathic medicine
- The degree must have been obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
- Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia
- Residency Training: completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
- Approved residencies: ACGME, AOA, or other residencies with appropriate training as defined by local Medical Staff Executive Committee
- Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited programs may be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs); PRPs must be fully licensed and may be appointed on intermittent or fee-basis
- PRPs are not independent practitioners and have a restricted scope of practice under supervision
- Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may be appointed as PRPs
- Proficiency in spoken and written English

In accordance with VA Directive and Handbook 5019 - The physical requirements include lifting up to 10 lbs, sitting, standing, walking, bending, twisting, grasping, manipulation, reaching above the shoulder, and operating machinery as specified
- Provide medical evaluation and direct overall management of patients in collaboration with the inter-disciplinary health care team
- Provide comprehensive medical and selected specialty services for outpatients and inpatients in Gastroenterology
- Provide patient care to veterans in Gastroenterology as consultative care
- Diagnose, treat, and manage GI and hepatobiliary diseases according to standard methods
- Provide inpatient and outpatient consultation services related to GI and liver disease
- Oversee the administration of conscious sedation
- Perform GI procedures including EGD (gastroscopy), complex stricture dilation, EGD with percutaneous gastrostomy tube placement, colonoscopies, and push enteroscopy
- IBD experience is preferable but not required
- Share GI on-call and weekend consultations and procedures with other staff gastroenterologists
- Collaborate with Physician Assistants and nurse coordinators
- Supervise and educate Internal Medicine Residents and medical students from Washington University School of Medicine and Saint Louis University School of Medicine
