Position Overview
Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, the Division Chief provides day-to-day oversight of the Division’s administrative and financial functions and leadership in defining and implementing the research/scholarly, clinical service and educational missions of the Division in alignment with the goals and objectives of the Department and Washington University School of Medicine (WashU Medicine) as well as major affiliated partners in BJC Healthcare.
The Division Chief will be an outstanding leader in academic head & neck surgical oncology with strengths in the clinical, research and education domains. The Division Chief oversees the inpatient and outpatient clinical enterprise, steers a top rated, competitive microvascular fellowship program, and will expand upon the success of the Division’s research enterprise. The Division Chief will lead faculty recruitment and faculty development efforts and provide mentorship to faculty and fellows.
The Chief has oversight of administrative functions of the Division including financial operations and infrastructure and personnel that support the administration of the Division.
The Department of Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery is among the top academic departments in the country with a rich 130-year history of leadership built on the foundations of academic medicine: patient care, research, and education. The department is a $60 million enterprise, ranks #2 in NIH funding (NIH RePORTER) and comprises 200 staff and 50 faculty members across eight divisions, with three areas of focus: cancer, neuroscience, and mucosal biology.
The Division of Head & Neck Surgery stands as a national leader in the treatment of complex head and neck cancers, combining advanced clinical care, groundbreaking research, and global education initiatives. Its multidisciplinary approach integrates surgeons with medical and radiation oncologists, radiologists, speech-language pathologists, and nutrition specialists to deliver individualized, comprehensive care.
Clinical ExcellenceSupported by 10 faculty (7 physicians/surgeon scientists and 3 research faculty), 5 advanced practice providers, and 20+ staff, the Division manages over 10,400 clinic visits and 1,950 surgeries annually. The recently established Robert Ebert and Greg Stubblefield Head and Neck Tumor Center provides integrated, multidisciplinary care and a platform for collaborative research; the Chief serves as the Center’s Co-Director.
Research LeadershipWith over 10 R01s and 2 K08s, the Division drives NIH-funded research in tumor biology, immunotherapy, metabolomics, and spatial biology, in collaboration with the Siteman Cancer Center.
EducationThe fellowship in Advanced Head & Neck Surgical Oncology and Microvascular Reconstruction trains two microsurgery fellows each year; frequently matching among the best applicants as a premier fellowship in the country. The fellowship offers unparalleled exposure to transoral techniques (TLM, TORS) and complex reconstruction.
QualificationsThe successful candidate will be a visionary and strategic leader with leadership experience in an academic medical center and a record of individual scholarship, collaborative clinical leadership in program growth and development, and educational excellence. Qualified candidates will possess an MD, DO or MD/PhD, be certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, have completed a Head and Neck Oncology AHNS-accredited fellowship, hold or be qualified to obtain an unrestricted license to practice medicine in Missouri, and be eligible for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or above.
