Overview
Under the direction of the Fleet Supervisor, diagnose, maintains and repairs diesel, gasoline, and various other types of vehicles. This is skilled mechanical work for the City of St. George with an emphasis on Medium/Heavy Duty vehicles and equipment.
Essential Functions- Performs skilled mechanical work in diagnosis, repair, maintenance, and overhaul of a wide variety of both light and heavy construction equipment, including fire apparatus and police, water, power, sewer, and street maintenance equipment.
- Repairs and services automobiles and light trucks, including major engine overhauls, adjustment of computer command controls, electronic ignitions, brakes, clutches, diesel engines, and transmissions.
- Diagnoses drivetrain and exhaust after treatment components using sophisticated computer testing equipment. Performs adjustments or replaces defective parts as required.
- Performs oxyacetylene and electronic welding as required. Fabricates specialized equipment. Lays out, cuts, and fits material for welding.
- Performs state safety inspections.
- Performs detailed repair notes on completed repairs for future repair order history, of parts and materials used for work orders.
- Diagnoses equipment malfunctions to determine the most effective and economical means of repair. Makes decisions of what repairs will be made and completes all required work to achieve proper vehicle performance.
- Performs preventive maintenance for all City equipment and vehicles such as lubrication, oil change, and minor repairs as needed.
- Up-fits various vehicles (police, fire, utility) that require extensive electrical and computer software knowledge and procedures.
- Reads, diagnoses, and comprehends diagnostic tools using OBDII technology, including programmable logic systems, and installs and repairs such systems.
- Understands, diagnoses, and repairs multiplex data systems using laptop computer technology.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Work performed in an automotive repair shop environment. Moderately heavy physical activity. Required to push, pull, or lift medium heavy weights exerting up to 40-50 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10-25 pounds of force frequently. Bends, stretches, twists, or reaches with body, arms, and/or legs. Detects or tells the difference between sounds that vary in pitch and loudness. Moves hand, hand together with arm, or two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
Quickly and repeatedly adjusts the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions. Makes precisely coordinated movements of fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble small objects. Matches or detects differences between colors, including shades of color and brightness. Stands, walks, or sits uncomfortably for extended periods. Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by weather.
Exposure to constant or intermittent sounds or a pitch or level sufficient to cause marked distraction or possible hearing loss. Exposure to conditions, such as fumes, noxious odors, dust, mist, gases, and poor ventilation, which affect the respiratory system, eyes, and the skin. Exposure to stress because of human behavior.
Note: Employees in this classification may be required to work unconventional shifts and to respond to emergencies. Must supply own hand tools and rollaway to perform duties as required.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Training in CAN/multiplexing data systems required. Recent experience in Automotive/Diesel CAN/Multiplexing systems and current Automotive/Diesel technology.
Experience: Minimum of four (4) years full time currently employed in the field or recent experience in Automotive/Diesel truck or Heavy equipment repair, electrical repair, and diagnosis of complex CAN/Multiplexing systems with current technology of passenger vehicles and light duty pickups. Thorough knowledge of Controller Area Network (CAN) system network communication. Experience and ability to wire and/or repair any components in a complete electrical system.
