Course description: An introduction to a wide range of topics situated in modernism, postmodernism, and the contemporary that inform current art practice and critical discourse. The course investigates post-1970 art practice through diverse societal, cultural, and political influences of contemporary critical thought.

Estimated TA support: 120 hours

Sessional dates of appointment: May 1, 2026 - June 30, 2026

Salary (per Half-course, Inclusive Of Vacation):

  • Sessional Lecturer I: $9,820.70
  • Sessional Lecturer I Long Term: $10,510.04
  • Sessional Lecturer II: $10,510.04
  • Sessional Lecturer II Long Term: $10,760.28
  • Sessional Lecturer III: $10,760.28
  • Sessional Lecturer III Long Term: $11,030.36

Minimum qualifications: MA or MFA required with teaching experience. Applicants may be asked to supply references.

Preferred qualifications: Experience teaching art and design students.

Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II or Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12 of the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 collective agreement.

Undergraduate or graduate students and postdoctoral fellows of the University of Toronto are covered by the CUPE 3902 Unit 1 collective agreement rather than the Unit 3 collective agreement, and should not apply for positions posted under the Unit 3 collective agreement.

Responsibilities

Preparation and delivery of course material; managing digital teaching materials and platform, supervision of teaching assistants; preparation and delivery of assignments, tests, final examinations and deferred final examinations; marking of student work, submission of grades, dealing with student enquiries, appeals and petitions and student contact hours.
