DescriptionThis course looks at banking where it actually lives: in markets shaped by competition, information frictions, and strategic behavior. Instead of frictionless models, you will study banks as imperfectly competitive institutions that create liquidity and allocate credit while managing risk...and sometimes amplifying it. We examine how these forces shape lending, monitoring, and funding, and how policy tools such as deposit insurance, capital requirements, and resolution regimes both stabilize the system and distort incentives.
By linking core theory to major financial crises and current policy debates, the course develops a clear, integrated view of modern banking. Through interactive discussions, a core research project, guest speakers from the industry, and current policy debates, you will apply economic tools to the real decisions and trade-offs facing financial systems today.
