Critical Care Physician, Pulmonologist
The Medical Director Pulmonary and Critical Care will work collaboratively in a dyad partnership with the Director of Critical Care Nursing to define, establish, and oversee intensive care unit operations. This role requires collaboration with service lines such as cardiovascular, acute care surgery, neuro critical care, trauma, maternal fetal medicine, oncology, and hospitalists. The director will directly supervise ICU Medical Directors for the Shock Trauma ICU, Coronary ICU, and Thoracic ICU;
oversee operations of the Schmidt Chest Clinic; collaborate with Neuro Critical Care physician leaders; and fulfill duties as Department Chair of Pulmonary and Critical Care. The Director reports to the Senior Medical Director for Pulmonary and Critical Care Region.
The Pulmonary and Critical Care Medical Director provides leadership and oversight for ICU and pulmonary operations, ensuring a culture of high reliability, measurable care quality, and operational efficiency. The role administers the financial, clinical, and administrative performance of ICU operations and the Schmidt Chest Clinic.
EssentialJob Duties
- Lead physician and advanced practice provider collaborations and define care models that meet patient needs.
- Ensure evidence-based ICU standards are established and implemented.
- Define and establish care models for pulmonary patients.
- Lead strategic vision and physician component of critical care and pulmonary services at Intermountain Medical Center.
- Execute policies and procedures related to ICU environments and pulmonary clinic.
- Ensure compliance with governmental agencies’ standards.
- Develop and maintain credentialing and privileging criteria for hospital providers.
- Address inappropriate, unprofessional, or concerning behavior and communicate to leadership.
- Champion quality initiatives and policies.
- Develop, educate, and drive results for key performance metrics (patient experience, CMS metrics, documentation metrics, complication rates).
- Complete academic faculty reviews as Department Chair and collaborate with the Medical Director of Acute Care Research.
- Work with graduate medical education leadership to ensure high-quality educational experiences for learners.
- Attend committee meetings regularly.
- Assist in quality reporting and address performance concerns for providers, including peer review for ICU and critical care cases.
- Maintain standards of Zero Harm.
- Conduct annual performance reviews for physician leaders in Pulmonary and Critical Care Operations.
- Maintain collegial environment with consultants and in-patient caregivers.
- Establish professional standards for physicians in pulmonary and ICU services.
- Promote employee engagement.
- Address capital needs of Pulmonary and Critical Care.
- Develop and maintain operational, financial, and care metrics.
- Collaborate with the systemic Pulmonary and Critical Care for strategy and best practice development.
- Ensure alignment with Intermountain System Pulmonary and Critical Care Operations.
- Medical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from an ACGME or AOA accredited institution.
- ABMS or equivalent AOA board certification in Pulmonary or Critical Care.
- Active medical licensure or in process of obtaining licensure.
- Minimum three years of clinical experience in a critical care setting.
- Three years of experience leading successful improvement in clinical settings.
- Two years of progressive healthcare leadership experience.
- Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Training in improvement science.
- Experience in a complex health system (hospitals, ambulatory clinics, post-acute care).
- Demonstrated leadership of clinicians.
- Interact with others verbally and listen to spoken information.
- Operate computers, telephones, office equipment, and manipulate paper requiring finger and hand movements.
- See and read computer monitors and documents.
