Duties SummaryAssists in conducting a variety of field investigations in connection with water service malfunctions, abnormalities, interruptions, complaints, and activities related to water conservation and reduction in unaccounted for water; receives training and performs selected phases of investigative work on a progressively responsible basis; and performs other related duties as required.

Overall paid or unpaid experience must be of such scope and responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate that you have the ability to perform the duties of the position.
NOTE:
Calculation of experience is based on full-time, 40‑hour work weeks. Part‑time experience must be pro‑rated. Example:
Twelve months of experience at 20 hours per week is equivalent to six months of experience. In addition, hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week will not be credited. Example:
Twelve months of experience at 60 hours per week is equivalent to one year, not one and one‑half years.
Training and
Experience:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and one year of work experience which shall have involved public contact, interviewing, investigative, fact‑finding, inspectional, or other related activities.
License Requirement:
Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
Knowledge of: basic principles and practices of public relations; basic investigative, interviewing, and fact‑finding methods and techniques; grammar and word usage; report writing.
Ability to: learn, understand, interpret, and explain departmental rules, regulations, and policies governing water service to consumers; gather, analyze, and evaluate data; identify causes of water service malfunctions, interruptions, or stoppages; understand the components of water distribution systems such as reservoirs, pumping stations, and sources of supplies; understand the elementary principles of hydraulics as they apply to water distribution systems and consumers’ piping systems, plumbing fixtures, and appliances;
operate, maintain, and use various instruments and devices used in investigative work such as pipe locators, leak detectors, pressure recording gauges, and meter recording registers; read and work from construction plans; prepare maps and sketches of underground piping systems; provide mathematical computations; prepare clear and concise reports; maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and others; deal tactfully and effectively with the public;
and follow oral and written instructions.
Health and Physical Condition Requirements:
Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties.
