CULINARY ARTS ASSISTANT, Classification I – HIGH SCHOOL
Hours: 7:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Job Goal: To positively represent the school and district by supporting the daily operations of the Culinary program, ensuring a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment. The Culinary Arts Assistant will provide general facility support and actively supervise high school students, promoting responsibility, safety, and skill development in a hands‑on educational setting.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School diploma required
- Preferred Associates’ Degree or Bachelor’s Degree
- Certification of good health, as required
- Successful completion of all applicable tests
- Two years of experience working with children
- Experience in the food industry, preferred
- Demonstrated ability to communicate, organize, maintain records, handle public relations, perform math/accounting tasks, and maintain confidentiality
- Alternatives may be considered as determined by the Superintendent or designee
Reports to: Classroom Teacher/Building Principal
Performance
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning of material or skills introduced by the teacher
- Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality regarding student information
- Assist with large group activities/instruction
- Assist with supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, and field trips
- Positively interact with students, staff, and community; participate in oral/written communication
- Guide independent students, enrichment work, and remedial work set up by the teacher
- Operate and care for classroom equipment used for instruction
- Help students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by the teacher
- Distribute and collect workbooks, papers, and other instructional materials
- Assist with lunch preparation/service, clean‑up routine, and student uniform assistance
- Alert the regular teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student
- Serve as the chief source of information for any substitute teacher in the teacher’s absence
- Serve as substitute teacher if minimum requirements for a substitute permit are met
- Oversee daily operations for the South Lake Bistro, as established by the Culinary Arts teacher
- Responsible for culinary purchases of classroom and Bistro supplies
- Responsible for accounting, record keeping, reconciliation, and deposit of collected cash and sales
- Serv Safe manager certification required;
Allergen certification required; registered as a Serv Safe proctor - Maintain the restaurant’s Weebly site and South Lake Bistro Facebook page; update menu, news items, hours, and photos; compose informational emails to staff and public
- Track budget, accounts receivable, and accounts payable
- Professional dress and hygiene required; casual attire only on designated casual attire day; nonslip/nonskid shoes required
- A vehicle is required; may need to run to local Kroger to purchase supplies with the school’s Kroger card
- Learn Square system and/or other POS system; teach students and manage cash drawer
- Cultivate public relations through emails, events, meet and greets, and other opportunities
- Carry uniforms and aprons from classroom to laundry room each week for laundering; sort and organize laundry
- Move throughout various areas (restaurant, classroom, kitchen) while monitoring students
- Attend after‑school and evening events (e.g., Festival of Arts, Arts Beats & Eats, eighth grade visit, and other community/school events); record attendance on timesheet
- Flexibility in schedule required
- First aid/AED/CPR certification required
- Participate in in‑service training programs as assigned
- Other duties as assigned by Classroom Teacher/Principal
