REGISTERED NURSE
DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS
SALARY: $69,746.06 – $ (Advanced starting salary within the range will be considered based on exemplary qualifications.)
This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week position which includes a full range of benefits including Paid Time Off, Extended Medical Leave, Holidays, Employee Health, Dental, Life, Disability, Retirement, and Tuition Assistance programs.
This position requires working a minimum of two (2) weekends per month and holidays as assigned. May assist in filling-in for other shifts based on staffing needs – such as PTO days, call-in’s, etc.
JOB OVERVIEW:
This position requires registered nurses to provide comprehensive healthcare to inmates within the correctional facility. This includes conducting assessments, providing intake assessments, and providing routine and urgent medical care and intervention to the inmate population at the Department of Corrections within the licensed scope in an autonomous environment. Responsibilities include administering treatment and medications and managing chronic illness, as well as administrative/correctional office duties, medical, dental, psychiatric, obstetric, post-operative, triage care, and responding to medical emergencies.
These duties are to be performed under the supervision and guidance of the Health and Services Coordinator and strictly within the RN’s authorized (licensure) capabilities.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Ensures the health and welfare of the inmates and is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment in collaboration with Correctional Security Staff.
• Work autonomously within scope of licensed abilities to collaborate with physicians, counselors, and peers to develop treatment plans.
• Provides emergency evaluations and treatment. Evaluate and triage routine requests for medical treatment.
• Gathers detailed information. Performs physical and mental assessments. Compiles medical history.
• Evaluates and determines if a detainee is fit for confinement.
• Arranges patient transport to appointment and hospital.
• Responds to emergency calls for medical assistance in housing units.
• Assists physician, dentist, counselor, and psychiatrist. Coordinates services and activities. Obtain, document, and carry out orders of health care providers. Interprets physicians’ orders. Handles physician orders via telephone.
• Monitors and manages the inventory of narcotics and syringes.
• Works varied hours including different shifts, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.
• Draws blood, obtains specimens, assists with x-ray examinations, dispenses oral medications, administers IM/SQ medications, administers TB tests and gives injections. Documents all actions in the legal medical records system.
• Maintains knowledge of jail nursing requirements and practices including HIPAA compliance.
• Maintains knowledge of current inmate nursing care. Participates in on-going training to comply with license and correctional health professional certification. Maintains active BLS certification.
• Prepares medical incident reports and assists in maintaining custody of medical records.
• Attends and participates in staff meetings.
• Performs suicide risk screenings and interventions.
• Performs Detoxification assessments and treatment.
• Provides orientation to new employees and contracted agency nurses, ensuring accountability for their actions and activities during their orientation period.
• Performs clerical tasks such as typing, filing records, scheduling appointments, maintaining daily statistics, answering telephone calls, data entry, transcribing physician’s orders, and the use of Electronic Medical Records.
• Assists with maintaining medical and office records. Assists with medical inventory, supplies, and monitoring medications and narcotics.
• Assists with conducting safety/sanitation inspections. May assist with ordering other diagnostic services and arrangements for patient transport to appointments and hospital.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
