PurposeThe purpose of this position is to supervise the Plans Examiner and Building Inspectors, review commercial and residential plans for compliance with construction codes and city ordinances, enforce the provisions of all building codes, give interpretations of building codes and assist in adopting policy and procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Manages the Building Division and supervises and directs the employees of that division (Building Inspectors and Plans Examiner).
- Informs and advises the general public, contractors, property owners, architects, engineers, developers and others regarding building inspection activities, building code enforcement, building permit requirements, violation correction procedures, building standards, codes and zoning matters.
- Supervises plan review, building code enforcement, building permit approval and inspection of new construction.
- Review commercial and residential plans for building codes, mechanical codes, electrical codes, plumbing codes, structural integrity, architectural design, handicapped accessibility and related city ordinances.
- Perform inspections of construction sites and existing structures for building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, zoning, structural integrity, architectural design, handicapped accessibility and related city ordinances.
- Acts as inspection and code enforcement liaison to other agencies.
- Coordinate inspection functions with other City Departments and agencies.
- Directs preparation or prepares violation information for prosecution. Testify in court as needed.
- Maintain and manage storage of records and construction documents as required by state law.
- Develops Building Division policies and procedures.
- Vocational or technical training in building codes, building trades, construction management, building inspections or related fields.
- Seven years building inspection, plan review and code enforcement experience.
- Three years supervisory experience preferred.
- ICC Certified Residential and Commercial Plans Examiner and Certified Building Official required.
- Valid driver's license.
- Any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Ability to work under generally safe and comfortable conditions where exposure to construction site hazards such as toxic agents, noise, vibrations, wetness, machinery, electrical currents and/or dust may cause discomfort and poses little risk of injury.
