Job Description & How to Apply Below
The Controller is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing the company’s accounting and finance operations, ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial reporting while providing practical insight to support profitable growth. This role is both hands‑on and strategic—owning disciplined close, strong internal controls, and multi‑state staffing‑specific financial rigor while functioning as a partner to executive leadership. The ideal candidate brings a “builder” mindset and strong technical accounting judgment with CPA or comparable experience preferred: able to tighten processes and controls without slowing sales, improve forecasting and working‑capital discipline, and create dashboards that matter.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Oversee timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and year‑end closings; establish a consistent close cadence and clear accountability across the accounting team.
- Ensure a well‑supported, fully reconciled balance sheet, including cash, accounts receivable, accrued payroll, payroll taxes, commissions, workers’ compensation accruals, and other key staffing‑related accounts.
- Oversee preparation and accuracy of GAAP‑compliant financial statements (Income Statement, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow) and management reporting packages.
- Maintain strong journal entry governance and reduce recurring reconciling items through root‑cause analysis and process improvements.
- Own tight management of revenue recognition policies and practices in a complex staffing environment, ensuring proper alignment of revenue, cost of services, and related accruals.
- Oversee gross margin management, including bill/pay spread accuracy, payroll‑to‑billing alignment, and ongoing validation of margin integrity.
- Build and monitor margin analytics across key profit drivers to identify margin leakage and compression early.
- Strengthen accrual and WIP‑style discipline appropriate for staffing, including unbilled receivables, payroll burden, commissions, incentives, and workers’ compensation.
- Lead weekly cash flow management aligned with payroll cycles, funding requirements, and client payment schedules.
- Develop and maintain a rolling 13‑week cash flow forecast to support proactive working capital and liquidity management.
- Oversee accounts receivable aging and collections strategy to improve DSO and cash predictability.
- Develop and maintain internal controls that protect company assets while supporting sales velocity and operational efficiency.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax, payroll, and multi‑state regulatory requirements relevant to staffing operations.
- Oversee workers’ compensation financial oversight, including accruals, audits, and class code reviews, in coordination with HR and operations.
- Coordinate internal and external audits and manage relationships with auditors and external advisors.
- Manage lender reporting as applicable, including borrowing base calculations and loan covenant compliance.
- Develop and manage the annual budget and provide forecasting and variance analysis with actionable insights.
- Partner with leadership to support pricing strategy, hiring decisions, and growth initiatives through financial modeling and unit economics analysis.
- Build dashboards and KPI reporting that provide clear visibility into gross margin, cash flow, recruiter productivity, and operational performance.
- Improve accounting systems, integrations, and workflows across ATS, payroll, and general ledger platforms to enhance data accuracy and efficiency.
- Lead, coach, and develop the accounting and finance team, establishing clear expectations, accountability, and a culture of continuous improvement.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field. Equivalent experience may be considered.
- CPA preferred.
- 8+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
- Deep understanding of staffing industry financial drivers, including workers’ compensation, gross margin management, and DSO.
- Previous experience with mergers and acquisitions preferred.
- Experience in corporate finance, financial reporting, and…
