Job Summary
The Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides care to patients at Northwestern Orthopedics following established standards and practices and within the scope of their licensure and credentialing, including writing orders for medications, performing diagnostic tests and therapeutic medical procedures.

Executive Medical Director;
Chief Administrative Officer
Medical Staff Members, patients and patients’ families, and hospital employees.
ScopeDiagnostic equipment including but not limited to ED Ultrasound Unit, ECG machine, external pacer, Dinamap blood pressure machine, monitor, defibrillator, cast removal saw, SMS computer, and Pulsavac. Computers, Electronic Health Records.
Physical DemandsProlonged, extensive or considerable standing/walking. Lifts, positions, pushes and/or transfers patients. Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling or crouching. Ability to move quickly in response to emergency care situations.
Working ConditionsRegularly exposed to the risk of blood borne diseases. Contact with patients under wide variety of circumstances. Exposed to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries and illnesses). Subject to varying and unpredictable situations. Handle emergency or crisis situation. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours. Occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries.
Required Protective EquipmentErgonomically correct computer equipment, as well as PPE required on a case by case basis to perform appropriate patient care (eye protection, face protection, goggles, mask, gown, non‑sterile medical gloves and sterile medical gloves).
Essential Functions- Provides diagnosis, treatment, consultation and follow up for patients seen in Northwestern Orthopedics.
- Completes timely History and Physical and documentation
- Orders appropriate lab and diagnostic procedures and studies
- Interprets and integrates data to deliver appropriate therapeutic goals
- Utilizes referral services when appropriate
- Provides education to patients on both acute and chronic care of condition.
- Implements medical care within their limits of privileges, including writing orders for medications, and prescribing out‑patient medications according to Vermont Pharmacy Rules and Regulations.
- Effectively communicates with the patient and the family/support system about the treatment plan, resources and required follow up care.
- Utilizes the hospital’s electronic health record by appropriately documenting all patient interactions.
- Actively participates in hospital committees and maintains both a collegial and independent relationship with members of the medical staff and hospital employees.
- Demonstrates support of and assists with the execution of cost saving process improvement initiatives. Partners with other departments of the hospital to ensure efficient flow of patients.
- Assist surgeon in surgical care of patients including: pre‑operative history and physical, orders, OR set up, surgical assistance, and post‑operative care.
