Job SummaryThe Primary Prevention Specialist designs and implements programs that reduce risk factors and promote protective factors for youth and young adults in Franklin and Grand Isle counties. This position focuses on preventing and reducing underage and binge drinking (ages 12–20) and cannabis use (ages 12–25), while supporting broader substance misuse prevention efforts. The role includes data analysis, community collaboration, program development, and engagement strategies that foster healthy behaviors and environments.
This is a grant funded position.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in public health or related field, or equivalent experience.
Experience
- Knowledge of effective prevention strategies.
- Working with diverse stakeholders (government, nonprofits, schools).
- Facilitating multi-stakeholder meetings and coordinating projects.
- Program development and evaluation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Other Skills
- Creative, collaborative, and detail-oriented self-starter.
- Ability to create and maintain project work plans.
- Valid VT driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Sedentary to light. Occasional lifting up to 20 lbs.
Working Conditions:
Primarily office setting and travel to community partner locations.

Essential Functions- Data & Assessment:
Collect, analyze, and interpret data to identify community needs, measure program effectiveness, and inform prevention strategies. Activities should be driven by community need, priorities, and opportunities; with scope of work informed by Community Health Needs Assessment and, community/county/regional data, etc. - Program Development:
Design, implement, and evaluate prevention initiatives aligned with community health priorities and grant requirements. - Collaboration:
Work closely with local partners and participate in the regional Prevention Coordination Team convened by United Way of Northwest Vermont, in its role as Lead Prevention Organization for NW & Central VT, to ensure localized coordination and alignment with regional priorities and strategies. Participating in Prevention Network activities and convenings as relevant. - Policy & Advocacy:
Support leadership and advocate for policies that address underlying drivers of substance misuse. - Community Engagement:
Build relationships with families, schools, municipalities, and organizations to strengthen community support for prevention efforts. - Communication:
Prepare and disseminate timely health promotion information through press releases, social media, and other channels. - Grant Management:
Write and administer grant proposals, ensuring compliance and reporting outcomes. - Reporting:
Track activities and outcomes for internal and external stakeholders.
