Utility/Maintenance Worker – School District


District/Organization: Saginaw Township Community Schools
Position/Type: Other, full time
Salary: $22.44 – $26.52 per hour

POSITION OVERVIEW

Under the direct supervision of the Buildings & Grounds Director, this mid-level position will assist senior Utility Maintenance staff to perform a wide variety of skilled general maintenance work in the repair and upkeep of school buildings, grounds and equipment. Performs additional work as required and provides assistance to other maintenance/custodial employees as needed by the position. This position has no supervisory duties and reports directly to the Director of Buildings and Grounds.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Operate equipment such as light to medium weight trucks power tools, backhoe, industrial mowers.
  • Performs and/or assists in skilled maintenance related to buildings and grounds work including plumbing, painting, carpentry, air conditioning, heating, electrical, masonry, metal work, glass, tile work, roofing, cleaning, flooring, ventilating systems, welding, grounds, and mechanics.
  • Assist with a variety of technical activities involved in the cleaning, maintenance and repair of swimming pool, surround areas and related equipment to assure safe and sanitary conditions.
  • Provides support in a variety of district locations for security, HVAC, and stadium duties as directed.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs full range of plumbing, irrigation, and pool equipment in assigned areas.
  • Communicates with employees and departments to exchange information and coordinate activities.
  • Prepares and maintains records and reports related to assigned activities as required.
  • May work under the supervision of the Utility Maintenance worker.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma and 2 years’ experience in the performance of building maintenance
  • Valid driver’s license with excellent driving record.
  • Basic knowledge of methods employed in buildings, grounds and maintenance work.
  • Basic knowledge of methods of warehouse operations, security practices and stadium operations.
  • Basic knowledge of proper methods of storing equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Basic oral and written communication skills.
  • Basic record-keeping techniques.
  • Basic HVAC and plumbing knowledge.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • In-person daily attendance required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of equipment
  • Bending at the waist, kneeling, stooping or crouching
  • Walking or standing for extended periods of time.
  • Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information
  • Climbing ladders and working from heights
  • Seeing to perform assigned grounds and aquatic duties
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling heavy objects up 100 pounds with assistance

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Indoor and outdoor work environment. Seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions. Moderate exposure to fumes, dust, odors, oil/grease and gases. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Hazards include: working around and with machinery having moving parts, working on ladders, hazardous chemicals and fumes

HOURS/PAY

  • 8 hours per day (260 work days/year, year-round employment)
  • Primarily day shift (6:30 a – 3:00 p)
  • Wages and benefits pursuant to collective bargaining agreement with SEIU. Current CBA is entering into negotiations for the  school year.
  • $22.44- $26.52 per hour based on experience. (+ 3% shift differential if assigned to 2nd shift)
