Overview

The Open Heart Recovery Registered Nurse works within the CCU to recover open heart surgery patients in the immediate post-operative period. The role includes leadership, direction and feedback to care team members, assessment, collaboration and coordination regarding plan of care, patient and family education, pain management, patient safety, and planning for patient discharge. This position will assist the patient to move safely and effectively through their hospital stay.

• Supports the organization's patient flow efforts through compliance to unit and Patient Services policies.
• Remains flexible in cooperation with 24-hour staffing patterns and scheduling needs for provision of care in all inpatient units.
• Communicates with patients and families in a professional, therapeutic, and courteous manner.
• Has clinical and social contact with patients across all age groups and can appropriately assess, care for and treat them according to Covenant Health Care guidelines.
• Performs assessment and synthesizes data collected to determine patient physiologic, psychologic, and cognitive status.
• Formulates and coordinates a goal-directed plan of care prioritized by nursing diagnoses and identified patient care concerns.
• Delegates, supervises and implements care with adherence to standards defining the process.
• Collaborates with all health care disciplines to facilitate patient outcomes, assess readiness for discharge and anticipate discharge needs.
• Identifies patient learning needs and discharge instructions; implements measures to meet those needs.
• Exhibits nursing judgment and critical thinking within the nursing process.
• Administers medications as outlined by Patient Service guidelines and policies.
• Documents all patient care observations and interventions in the electronic record accurately and timely.
• Participates in quality management and maintains knowledge, skills and competencies related to area of practice.
• Maintains patient rights and confidentiality and supports risk management activities.
• Participates in unit meetings and activities to support unit function and organizational goals.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

• Graduate from an NLN-accredited school of nursing.
• Registered Nurse with current licensure in the State of Michigan.
• BLS certification required.
• ACLS required within 1 year of hire or transfer.
• Minimum of one year of ICU nursing experience required; open heart recovery experience preferred.
• Intra Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) certification preferred.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

• Open Heart Recovery experience preferred.
• ACLS certification required.

Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance. Constant standing and walking. Frequent lifting up to 25 lbs; occasional lifting up to 100 lbs. Frequent and occasional activities as listed: standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, bending, reaching, handling, speaking, hearing, various vision requirements including depth perception and color vision.
