Overview
Under general direction of nursing leadership, the Manager RN is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the operations and staff of the respective department. This position has 24-hour responsibility and accountability for planning, directing, coordinating, and evaluating nursing care to ensure optimal patient health outcomes in their department. This position links nursing leadership with nursing care through the application of organizational and nursing service policies, procedures, and care delivery model.
The Manager RN uses the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements to guide leadership and practice. The Manager RN attains knowledge and competence reflective of current nursing practice; promotes innovation and futuristic thinking by incorporating evidence based practice and research findings.
Has responsibility for the Surgical Department. Is competent to assure provision of effective, high quality patient care, which includes coordinating clinical nursing practice and patient care delivery, managing surgery and personnel schedule, development of personnel, and compliance with regulatory and professional standards.
Responsibilities- Coordination of Operating Room, PACU, Ambulatory Surgery and pain procedures. (40%)
- Responsible for supervising care of patients in preoperative, perioperative, and post-operative phases. (30%)
- Serves on Nursing Management Committee, Infection Control Committee, Safety committee, and any others that may apply. (30%)
- Other duties and responsibilities include:
- Maintenance of quality monitors in OR with strict observance of medical and surgical asepsis.
- Monitoring refrigerator temperature logs, eye wash station checks, crash cart checks, and medication inventory.
- Participation in Performance Improvement activities.
- Observance of standard universal precautions for staff.
- Ensuring hospital policies are followed regarding history and physicals, lab work, consents, consultations and assistants.
- Scheduling surgeries and procedures according to surgeon and pain specialist designated privileges.
- Providing administration with monthly statistics of census, PI activities, chart review activities, and meeting minutes.
- Maintaining records of preventative maintenance of anesthesia equipment, autoclaves, and related OR/pain procedure equipment.
- Responding to variances in equipment and scheduling surgery; managing staff schedules and on-call coverage.
- Collaborating to update policies and procedures with Radiology/Cardiology Manager, Administration and/or Infection Control Manager.
- Conducting and maintaining annual evaluations; staff competency reviews; staff meetings and in-services; documenting competency reviews and meeting attendance.
- New employee orientation; ordering supplies and equipment; planning for capital equipment; scheduling equipment maintenance and monitoring for trends.
- Collaborating with Radiology/Cardiology Manager and Pain Clinic Supervisor to schedule/support Pain Procedures.
- Overseeing sterile processing with infection control to ensure policies are followed and the environment is clean and safe.
- Orients new personnel; schedules CS aides; participates in budgetary considerations for central sterile; delegates charge posting.
- Ensuring all staff attend annual Net Learning BLS and ACLS training for RNs; competent to function in OR staff, recovery, ambulatory surgery, and Pain Procedure roles.
