Position: Ultrasound Technologist I

Overview

The Ultrasound Technologist performs diagnostic ultrasound imaging including a variety of procedures (invasive and non-invasive) ranging from biopsies, routine OB/GYN, limited vascular, abdomen, small body parts to intra-cavity and color Doppler. The technologist must have strong critical thinking, interpersonal skills and problem-solving abilities while ensuring the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients under their care. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are necessary to interact with and instruct patients who may be under physical or emotional stress;

able to follow physicians verbal orders and imaging protocols. The technologist will work productively within a complex environment of inpatient, emergency department and outpatient settings, multitasking with changing priorities. The Ultrasound Technologist is responsible for obtaining information such as patient identity and history, reviewing medical records for exam appropriateness, and documenting accurately. The technologist should maintain a high standard of medical ethics, pursue lifelong learning to increase knowledge of the field, disease, and evolving procedures, and provide excellent customer service.

Responsibilities
  • 60% Produces quality images by selecting appropriate technical factors, equipment and transducer settings. Verifies patient orders and reviews appropriateness for the exam, obtains patient history, explains standard procedures, and addresses patient concerns to foster comfort and confidence, ensuring the needs of individual patients are met. Determines if images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes while using independent judgment to differentiate between normal and pathologic findings.
  • 20% Independently operates sonographic equipment, performs and communicates findings of diagnostic examinations, and manages daily department operations, patient scheduling, equipment maintenance, reporting equipment failures, and quality assessment (QA). Maintains a clean work environment and adequate supplies.
  • 20% Applies appropriate sterilization techniques with accurate documentation of logs, charts, forms, and records in paper and electronic formats. Complies with The Joint Commission, federal, state, and local regulatory laws, standards, and protocols.
  • Analyzes sonograms, synthesizes sonographic information and medical history, and communicates findings to the appropriate physician.
  • Provides ultrasound guidance for biopsies and aspirations. Prepares equipment and supplies; observes sterile techniques and assists the physician as needed.
  • Assumes responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients while under the ultrasound technologist’s care.
  • Delivers quality patient care using universal precautions, maintains patient confidentiality and practices appropriate medical ethics.
  • Communicates effectively verbally and in writing with staff, physicians and patients.
  • Maintains a clean work environment and adequate supplies.
  • Provides excellent customer service and demonstrates professionalism and courtesy toward all employees, physicians, staff, and My Michigan customers.
  • Cooperates with others to achieve departmental and hospital goals; attends and participates in departmental and medical center meetings.
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned, including assisting in other areas of the department as needed.
  • Provides department-specific on-call coverage during days, evenings and weekends as assigned between departments within the coverage area.
  • Flexibility to work long shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays; may be required to alternate shifts.
  • Performs other related duties as required by authorized personnel.
  • My Michigan Health requires competency in Microsoft Windows; employees may participate in further learning opportunities.
Certifications and Licensure
  • ARDMS AB - Abdominal Ultrasound Tech (Required). Equivalent experience:
    Ultrasound technologists performing general imaging (abdomen, small parts, OB/GYN) must obtain and maintain active ARDMS certifications in Abdomen or OB/GYN within one year of hire.
  • ARDMS OBGY - OB/GYN Ultrasound Tech (Required). Equivalent experience as noted.
