OverviewAs an integral member of the Hospice and Palliative Care Interdisciplinary team, the Chaplain provides spiritual and emotional support to patients, families, and staff, respectful of their cultural and religious beliefs.
Responsibilities- Participate in delivery of pastoral care to all faith traditions or no faith tradition.
- Assess spiritual and emotional needs of patients and families, including psychosocial issues and religious/spiritual coping.
- Practice ministry of presence with active listening, empathy, and nonjudgmental support within cultural contexts.
- Help patients and families address spiritual and emotional issues such as forgiveness, hope, courage, perseverance, loss of control, and relationships.
- Assist with ethical decision‑making (e.g., end‑of‑life decisions, advance directives).
- Provide prayer, comfort, and bereavement support as appropriate.
- Document spiritual assessments and interventions in medical and departmental records accurately and timely, following guidelines.
- Provide bereavement worship services and facilitate hospice‑sponsored support groups.
- Participate in ongoing professional development, peer review, and continuing education for pastoral care.
- Develop, present, and support orientation and continuing education programs on spiritual care, advance directives, and bereavement for associates and staff.
- Serve on hospice and palliative care committees and support spirituality in the workplace.
- Maintain administrative procedures, record pastoral care activity, and participate in continuous quality improvement.
- Assume role of Bereavement Coordinator supervising bereavement program and ensuring compliance with regulations.
- Other duties as assigned.
- One unit of CPE training in an ACPE‑accredited center or equivalent (e.g., Stephen Ministry, BeFriender Ministry).
- Bachelor's or master's degree in Theology preferred.
- Experience working with death and dying, individuals/family/caregiver.
- One year of hospice and/or palliative care experience preferred.
- BLS required.
- Valid Michigan Driver’s License, reliable transportation, and auto insurance required.
- Knowledge and commitment to hospice philosophy of care.
- Comfort in interfaith settings and ability to network community clergy and congregations.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Basic computer and data entry skills.
- Resilience and ability to provide pastoral care in crisis situations.
- Regular, punctual attendance per ADA, FMLA, and other standards.
- Frequent standing, walking, sitting, reaching, handling, and talking.
- Frequent near, mid, far vision and depth perception.
- Frequent lifting 0‑10 lbs; occasional lifting up to 100 lbs or more.
