Summary

This position is responsible for accurate registration and insurance verification in all registration areas at My Michigan Medical Center Saginaw and Towne Centre. It will make financial arrangements for patients without insurance or with inadequate insurance. A primary function of this position will be to perform point‑of‑service collections of co‑pay and deductible amounts from patients at the point of discharge in a diplomatic and customer focused manner.

The position must be able to work in a team atmosphere and have good communication skills. It will perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned. Casual staff are responsible for picking up a minimum of 50% of the open shifts available. All staff may be required to provide coverage at Saginaw Main ED and OP Registration as well as Towne Centre ED and OP Registration and are responsible for registration and insurance verification of all patients who present to registration.

Responsibilities
  • (40%) Collects accurate registration information, collects co‑pay amounts, posts the payment in the computer, prints receipts, balances cash at end of shift. Provides patients with pre‑printed materials.
  • (20%) Meets with the patient and/or family to explain insurance coverage, treatment costs, hospital billing policies and to inform them of their financial obligations upon discharge. Sets up payment plans.
  • (20%) Makes financial arrangements for patients without insurance or with inadequate insurance coverage and communicates available financial assistance program for self‑pay patients.
  • (20%) Accesses insurance eligibility websites to verify benefits and coverage. Able to assess co‑pay and deductible amounts and document the information.
  • Other duties and responsibilities:
    • Perform inpatient admission functions, including direct admits and emergency department admissions.
    • Obtain signatures for admission consent, Important Message from Medicare, review of patient emergency contacts, clergy information and notification of house chaplain.
    • Collect patient demographics to complete a registration accurately including documentation of MSP information for Medicare patients.
    • Use available tools to verify patient identification.
    • Perform pre‑registration for scheduled services.
    • Work all registration related Epic work queues.
    • Carry out special projects as assigned by supervisor.
Required Education

Education:

HIGH

Experience, Training and Skills
  • One year experience working with insurance and patient accounts required.
  • Typing skills and basic personal computer knowledge needed to enter patient information.
  • Basic math proficiency and customer service skills.
  • Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Maintains confidentiality with all patient information and data obtained.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and medical office practices, policies and procedures as normally acquired through experience working in the medical center or similar setting preferred.
  • Four (4) years experience working in a hospital setting with insurance, registration and collections preferred.
  • CHAA certification preferred.

Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions
  • Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as trauma, grief and death.
  • Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
  • Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
  • Overall vision and hearing are necessary with or without assisted device(s).
  • Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
  • Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow My Michigan Health blood borne pathogen and TB testing as required.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
  • Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
  • Physical Demand Level: Sedentary. Must be able to occasionally (0‑33% of the workday) lift or carry 0‑10 lbs.
