Overview
Overview As a member of the Resource Team, the Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) will strive to achieve the highest standards of excellence everyday, demonstrating exemplary Covenant values, outstanding clinical skills, and amazing flexibility.
The role of the Health Unit Coordinator includes a variety of receptionist, secretarial, and unit operational duties for an assigned patient care unit. A primary aspect of this role includes positive relations with patients, guests, physicians, co-workers and other departments. The Health Unit Coordinator demonstrates excellent customer service. He/She upholds the standards contained in the Vision, Mission and Values of Covenant, and commits to Extraordinary Care for Every Generation.
Responsibilities- Remains flexible in cooperation with 24-hour staffing patterns and scheduling needs for provision of care in all inpatient units

- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with all health care team members, patients, and families
- Has contact with patients, families, and multidisciplinary staff and is able to facilitate admissions, discharges, and daily care by the team according to guidelines as defined by Covenant Health Care
- Attending unit conferences, required competencies, in-service programs, annual mandatory education, competencies and continuing education activities to meet the organization’s expectations
- With key responsibilities for smooth, accurate, and timely patient flow, the HUC will accept calls and record patient information from patient placement regarding admissions and transfers
- Discharges are to be entered immediately into the EPIC system
- Supports patient care delivery by monitoring HUC worksheets
- Performs electronic chart checks every 1-2 hours
- Reviews orders for timely renewal
- Maintain daily ADT census flow
- Initiates, assembles, and maintains the patient chart, admission folders for patients, and thank you cards
- Monitors location of chart at all times
- Prepares charts at the point of patient discharge or expiration for pickup by Health Information Management
- Notifies RN when Physician is rounding
- Updates assignment sheets and validates staffing with schedules, assignment sheets and shift administrator or staffing coordinator
- Assists in calling in and/or calling off staff as requested
- Answers patient call lights in a timely fashion and informs appropriate caregiver of the need
- ECC:
Maintains on-call physician log, Facility Charge Calculator, review trauma and code 180 notes for completion
- Assists with overall unit appearance including cleaning desk area, microwaves and refrigerators
- Monitors and assists with: maintenance of dirty utility room; checking; assists stocking isolation carts
- Maintains appropriate levels of office supplies and patient education materials, orders & stocks as needed
- Daily regulatory checks including refrigerator temperature checks, daily weights, restraint required documentation
- Monitor &/or enter charges for: sitters, blood administration, isolation, and others as assigned
- Promotes a constructive and positive atmosphere within the work area by demonstrating the ability to cooperate with and assist fellow health team members as well as patients and their families
- Daily references Health Unit Coordinator Role Responsibility Checklist to ensure duties are completed each shift
- Other duties as assigned
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- High School diploma required.
- Completion of Medical Terminology course preferred.
- Graduate of a Medical Office Professional course or completion of Medical Assistant Program preferred.
- Health Unit Coordinator Course Or Commensurate Experience Preferred.
- Attending unit conferences, required competencies, in-service programs, annual mandatory education, competencies and continuing education activities to meet the organization's expectations.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- One year of experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
- Basic computer skills.
- Knowledge of standard office equipment.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated organizational skills.
- Ability to type 25 words per minute.
- Sound judgment in handling confidential or sensitive issues and material.
- Excellent time management, to achieve maximum productivity.
- Attentive to detail.
- Ability to maintain punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards.
