Nestled in the central part of Southeast Arizona’s Gila Valley, the City of Safford is a thriving rural Arizona City. With a population of just over ten thousand, it is the largest municipality in Graham County. Incorporated as a town in 1901 and becoming a city in 1955, Safford has become the major hub for Southeast Arizona. The City of Safford as an organization has multiple different departments and over 230 staff members including full time employees, seasonal employees, volunteer firefighters and council members to staff all the different positions at the City.
The City also provides all utilities for its residents and other residents in surrounding areas. In addition to the major utilities of gas, water, electric, sewer, and sanitation, the City has a landfill and airport that service the county.
SUMMARY: Under general supervision, performs skilled mechanical and electrical maintenance and repair duties to maintain the City’s fleet of vehicles and ancillary equipment.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This is a single class in the Fleet Division of the Public Works Department. This position reports to the Fleet Supervisor.

- Have the ability to perform highly skilled repairs on all types of equipment and vehicles
- Performs technical journey‑level repair and maintenance to medium to heavy vehicles and equipment.
- Inspects, services, maintains and repairs a variety of equipment and vehicles. Performs preventative and routine maintenance and troubleshooting activities.
- Tests, tunes, and adjusts all types of internal combustion engines. Operates and drives equipment and vehicles for the purpose of testing repairs before returning units to service.
- Rebuilds transmissions, differentials, suspensions and brakes.
- Goes on service calls to jump start vehicles, change tires or perform other types of work.
- Uses a computer to research and gather repair and diagnostic information on City vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to supervise Department of Correction Inmates.
- Be available for “On‑Call” and emergency status during non‑working hours.
- Order parts and maintains records and files on services provided and repairs made.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education, Experience, Certifications and Licenses:
- High School diploma or equivalent GED certificate, or equivalent experience.
- Two (2) years coursework in automotive or diesel training.
- Two (2) years work experience in automotive repair, including heavy equipment, automotive and manual transmissions and gas and diesel engine maintenance and repair.
- Valid State of Arizona Driver’s license with the ability to obtain a Class B license with Tanker endorsement within twelve (12) months of hire (Class A preferred but not required). Testing for commercial learner’s permit and/or endorsement tests must be completed with Motor Vehicle Division within six (6) months of hire. (Required to maintain employment).
- This position is considered a safety‑sensitive position and is subject to new hire and random drug and alcohol testing as outlined in the Alcohol & Substance Abuse policy listed in the Human Resources Personnel Manual.
