Gas System Specialist​/Welder

ORGANIZATION AND AREA INFORMATION:

Nestled in the central part of Southern Arizona’s Gila Valley, the City of Safford is a thriving rural Arizona City. With a population of just over ten thousand, it is the largest municipality in Graham County. Incorporated as a town in 1901 and becoming a city in 1955, Safford has become the major hub for Southeast Arizona. The City of Safford as an organization has multiple different departments and over 230 staff members including full time employees, seasonal employees, volunteer firefighters and council members to staff all the different positions at the City.

The City also provides all utilities for its residents and other residents in surrounding areas. In addition to the major utilities of gas, water, electric, sewer, and sanitation, the City has a landfill and airport that service the county.

Under general direction of the Gas Division Manager, performs skilled and advanced duties in the construction, installation, maintenance, renewal and repair of the City’s gas system. A Gas System Welder is responsible for welding steel gas lines using electric arc welding equipment.

This is the third level of a four-tier job group. An employee in this class is required to use appropriate safety equipment and follow safety procedures in performing assignments. This class is subject to emergency call-out and must be available for stand‑by, as required. This position is distinguished by the lower level class by assisting the Gas Division in training and reviewing the work of lower level gas system staff for compliance.

This position reports to the Gas Division Manager.

• Applies electric arc welding techniques and procedures to install, maintain, and repairgas lines in conformance with gas industry regulatory guidelines and specifications
• Monitors welding supplies on crew truck to ensure adequate amounts of gas lines, rods, fittings, etc., are available to complete assigned projects.
• Performsavarietyofskilledandadvanced,manualdutiesintheconstruction,installation, maintenance, renewal and repair of the City’s gas structures and systems.
• Assists in the installation of gas mains, meters, service lines, tapping, stopping and bypassing, including maintaining maps related to locations in accordance with state regulatory agency.
• Assists in the maintenance and repair to regulator stations and over pressure devices including calibrating field pressure gauges, flame ionization units, combustible gas indicators or gas detector sin accordance with state regulatory agency.
• Assists with gas leak surveys, cathodic protection, and other tasks to ensure the proper and safe condition and operation of the gas line system required by state regulatory agency.
• Digs and fills trenches manually or using light equipment.
  
  Learns to operate medium to heavy vehicles and equipment under supervision.
• Prepare and submit for review all records, reports and applicable forms in accordance with Arizona Corporation Commission and assist with annual audits to ensure compliance with natural gas industry.
