Overview
The On-Call Materials Handler is responsible for handling, unpacking, and sorting shipments of library materials, and operating computers and mobile devices such as the Automated Material Handling System (AMHS). Materials Handlers work behind the scenes to support Sacramento Public Library's circulation of materials.

On-Call employees can only be scheduled to work up to 19 hours per week and may not work more than 1,000 hours in a fiscal year.

Responsibilities- Regular and punctual attendance.
- Provide excellent customer service to external and internal users.
- Provide support to the operations of the organization to ensure timely delivery of information and materials to library users across 28 branches.
- Unpack and sort shipments of library materials, sort and pack surplus library materials for shipment.
- Transport library materials using equipment such as hand trucks.
- Operate, maintain, and clean a variety of equipment such as the Automated Material Handling System (AMHS) and Tote lifters.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Maintain patron confidentiality at all times.
High school diploma or G.E.D.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Demonstrate a working knowledge of computer use and mobile devices, including internet, email, and Microsoft Office products.
- Must be able to learn and become proficient with equipment and software programs as required to effectively and efficiently perform assigned duties.
- Must be able to learn circulation system functions and procedures including processing library materials and running reports in Sierra ILS software.
- Must have the ability to work as a team member and work independently to complete assignments.
- Must be able to provide efficient and courteous patron service towards a diverse patron population.
- Must read, speak, write and understand the English language.
- Must be able to effectively and courteously communicate and interact with customers and staff members; understand and follow oral and written instructions; deliver high quality work product; deliver services to customers with responsiveness courtesy and tact; and perform repetitive tasks while maintaining a high level of concentration.
Reliable personal transportation to and from work.
Working Conditions Physical/Mental Abilities- Ability to stand, walk, carry, and bend from 76 to 100% of the time.
- Ability to reach, stoop, squat, crouch and push carts and bins from 51 to 75% of the time.
- Ability to climb, balance, kneel, pull and sit from 25 to 50% of the time.
- Ability to work at waist level, between waist and shoulder level and above shoulder level from 34 to 66% of the time.
- Ability to lift and carry bins and boxes of library materials weighing 40-60 pounds 33% of the time, 20-39 pounds from 34 to 66% of the time and 1-19 pounds from 67 to 100% of the time.
- Ability to push/pull and maneuver book carts weighing up to 200 pounds 100% of the time.
- This position requires repetitive motion of hands/wrists up to 100% of the time.
- Must be able to manipulate small materials including labels, and general office tools.
- Specific vision abilities for this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
- Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of a library or workroom setting.
- Follow all safe workplace policies and procedures with regard to office equipment, accident prevention and observance of fire and building safety regulations.
- Possible exposure to angry or hostile individuals and to personally offensive library materials.
- Must be able to transport oneself to assigned work location in a timely manner.
